  • Gadget review - Leatherman, Coffee Percolator

I think we need a Gadget review section.

Leatherman: After owning a PSTII for the last 14 years (dated on the inside of left handle), I have broke a couple of things on it over the years, so I decided to upgrade to a Charge TTi, which is a titanium version. All I can say is wow, so much nicer to use, the blades and screwdrivers now lock in and it is so much nicer to in your hands.

    Pros:
    - Bought in US for $115AUS when dollar was $0.97
    - comes with spare screw driver bit
    - much nicer to use
    - blades/drivers lock in
    - std and serated blades
    - replaceable srew driver bits in case you break them

    Cons:
    - only outer casing is titanium, I really could not tell weight difference between alloy version, don't know if it is really worth extra $
    - extra bits require extra pouch

Would I recommed this product: Yes but look at alloy version.

PS - Leatherman offer an unconditional 25 year warranty, after I explained how I broke the needle nose pliers and broke a couple of screwdrivers, I sent it down to Leatherman Australia and they fix and upgraded the scrissors at no charge. I offered to pay as I was using it well out of its intended purpose but they said don't worry. Now I have one for both hands

Avanti Coffee Percolator: for those who love real coffee, I got a 4 cup percolator, it makes one aussie size mug and fits nicely on the MSR. Brillant for those frosty mornings !!

    Pros:
    - Real coffee on cold mornings
    - easy to keep clean
    - available in 5 different sizes
    - built tough out of SS, no glass fittings

    Cons:
    - ground coffee can burn, if you put it on hot flame before water has a chance to boil
    - cost $90 from House
    - burnt snow make it taste yuk !
    - just big enough for one aussie mug

Would I recommed this product: Yes must love coffee for price. If 4wd camping would probably go either of the two bigger sizes.

If you are even thinking of going near the airport, don't for get to take it off  ! As BF is a rigger, he is the same, it never left his pocket. Went to the airport and he forgot he had it on him. He fought with security to take it back to the car. They wanted to confiscate it there and then  . I understand they are doing a job, but I think some of them go over board  ! I should probably stop there...
