  • Off Road Trailer couplings Hyland v AT35 v Tregg

    Greetings guys
I would like to know what coulpings people use on their CT's. I have used the Tregg on my All Terrain However i have just sold that one and i am about to order a modcon and they have the option of the AT35 or the Hyland.

What are your thoughts on what you have or what you have heard from mates with something else. I have heard the Hyland can be a bit noisy like a standard trailer and the AT35 is a pig to line up.

    Is this right?
    thanks Adds

    Hi adds,

I have an AT 35 on my Trackabout camper. It has worked faultlessly over some pretty tough terrain. The only adverse comment I will make is that it is a bit of a bugger to hook up in sandy conditions. Apart from this it is excellent.

    Cheers

I have an AT35 on the Trackabout (for sale) and found that it worked very well. Quiet, strong but I have had problems hooking up in less than ideal conditions like my steep driveway. I have to haul it up on a tow rope and attach at the top. No big prob.
I now have a Jayco Outback Eagle and had a Hyland installed. Love it. It gives the flex but also the convenience of dropping the hitch straight down on the ball. So much easier! Easier to line up. I have no probs with noise. Noise means no grease!

          Here's a site I found that sells most offroead hitches- http://www.trailerwarehouse.com.au/inde ... =d218.html
I use a hitch called Nathan Hitches from the US, its very close to the Orac pictured. It does its job fine, although when I detach to camp I take the entire hitch off the towbar rather then stuffing around with the pin when reattaching.

            Hi Adds

I had a Treg coupling on one of my off road caravans. After finding it quite difficult to line up, I went for a Hyland. I have never looked back. It swivels in all directions and you just have to line it up (quite) closely, kick the van's drawbar and it clicks in.
When I ordered my latest Kedron off road van, I specified that it be fitted with a Hyland. Only way to go.
BTW, I have never seen the AT35 so I can't comment on that.
Lastly, being a caravan owner, I use a weight distribution hitch. I have been told that Treg's chew out the neoprene block if used with a weight distribution hitch.

            Cheers

We have the treg on our Camprite, have never had any problems lining it up.

                Works well off road.

We've got a Treg on our Coromal Van. It's a pain in the arse to line up solo, but once connected, works well.

I've heard the Hyland is a very good bit of gear though.

Re: Off Road Trailer couplings Hyland v AT35 v Tregg

I recently purchased a CT at the Brisbane Caravan and camping show in June (Still awaiting the CT due to delay in manufacturing). The hitch I went with is the new big brother to the DO25 hitch, the "DO35" hitch, rated at 3.5T.
It makes it a lot easier to line and the trailer hitch to the car as it has two diameters

The CT arrives mid July, so I will let you know how I find it after a few trips.

I've used a Hyland for years on my Camper Trailer with no probs and easy connection, my Supreme Getaway came with a Treg it was quickly changed for a Hyland, Tregs are a bitch to line up, and as mentioned are not compatable with load distribution hitch. There are several versions of Hyland light duty for trailers and heavy duty for Caravans.

I have had my CT out for a few trips since it arrive a few months ago and I must admit that I am really impressed with the DO35 hitch. I find it very simple to operate especially putting lining it up. All I got to do is roughly line it up and lower the jockey wheel and it generally finds the centre. A simple movement with the locking mechanism all it is locked and secure.

I've tried most types hitches, I've have now got a DO35 and would never go back to using other types.

Yep, have to agree, i love my DO35 easiest one i have used and very little effort to use safely means the missus can hitch it up herself if required!!

I am looking at putting one of the DO35 hitches on my CT, just wondering how much people paid for it.

                              Thanks
