27MHz AM Radio use

Hi There,

Does anybody still use the old 27MHz AM radio's or most people gone to UHF CB only?

The ereason i ask is that when i stripped out my dads Rodeo he had a GME TX822 27MHz radio and i don't know if i should keep it or just sell it to somebody who would get some use out of it.

27 MHz activity peaked in the 1970s, remained in the 1980s, and declined in the 1990s as most users moved to UHF CB, amateur radio, mobile phones, IRC internet chat or simply gave it away.

In the last 10 years or so 27 MHz AM activity has declined enormously. These days, you'll have no problem finding a vacant channel, even in major cities it is common to flick through them all and hear nothing at all.

Most major retailers have stopped selling 27 MHz radios, so those who want one will need to find one of the few specialised communications shops, haunt the pawn shops or the the local classifieds.

Nevertheless AM remains suitable for groups wanting cheap car-to-car communications amongst themselves and SSB maintains a significant 'hobby' following, with many operators erecting large beam antennas to allow interstate communications.

Unless you know other users of AM I think you most likely won't get much use out of it.... then again I doubt the unit holds much value on the second hand market either just due to lack of demand.

Thanks for that info.

I am not really concerned about how much i sell it for just really whether or not i should keep it and have it take up space in the vehicle.

I think dad hung onto it because of a case of nostalgia more than anything. He used them for most of his time in the NSW Rural Fire Service (this was while they were still just Volunteer Bush Fire Brigades)

That being said i will just put it on EBAY and also in the for sale here.

Hi Muddles,
I and a few mates still use 27mhz's(and also UHF). I did have mine set up in the back of a 100 series landcruiser for the kids. They think its great having their own radio.One advantage is nobody uses it so you don't get the colourful language.
The current problem is mounting in the Prado.
