  • New Jayco Outback About To Be Ordered

I'm just about to place an order on a brand spanking new 2009 Jayco Dove Outback. Was just wondering if anyone has had any expereinece with these campers.

We have just sold our Tambo Cooper that was only 2 yrs old as it was taking getting increasingly time consuming to set up and pack upo in a hurry with an 16month old running around needing constant attention. We now have another on the way.

I beliwve I have negoiated a pretty good deal, however I just wanted to hear of any horror stories. Obviously the Jayco will not go some places the Tambo would have gone, although 99% of the time the camper is just a base.

    Love to hear your stories....

Congrats on the new Jayco Dazz, like you we found that with two energetic little ones we needed to reduce our setup and pack up times. We are taking our new (secondhand) Coromal out this weekend for our first trial run with it since bringing it back to Alice from Brissy last weekend. Looking forward to setting it up fully for the experience, probably wont bother most of the time with the annex if we are only overnighting somewhere.

Look forward to seeing the pics when you get it.

I went for the an awning and bed fly's only for the same reason as I will never use an anexe.

Re: New Jayco Outback About To Be Ordered

        Hi Dazz
we bought a 2008 outback hawk in october got delivered in december they are a nice unit to stay in for a period of time comfortable except upgrade the mattress. Upon delivery we spent 3 hours at jayco to show us the in's and out's of set up a usage and noticed a few things pen marks on inside of bed ends, missing a microwave, out side lights along the side 2 didn't have globes, couldn't find the key to lock the door so go over it thougherly upon inspection we had to wait another 3 days until all work was done. The options we got were drop jacks, bagged bed ends extra privacy as the canvas is quite see thru, bagged awning and walls (walls are a waste of money we have never used them), boat rack comes in very handy, bayonet fitting near rear hatch for BBQ, extended drawbar so we can open the back door of the prado, plus they thru in all the sullage and water hoses that was nice of them

Also don't be fooled by the OUTBACK part of they older models are built alot tougher when they were called OFF ROAD. We done the oodnadatta track (dirt highway had just been grated by the looks) earlier this year and we done all of the usual stuff eg; tyre pressurers, taped up all vents and seals, but what had happened was the electric brake cables had frayed thru from constant rubbing and stone dammage, also the sullage pipe had been ripped out the entire pipe was gone we reccommend get a stone shield for the front of it as the spraying of rocks has the front of ours looking like an orange skin. So anyway we pulled up for the night opened he up and it was like a vacume bag inside dust over everything (they don't put selastic around the base of the floor in the factory) drove to Alice Srings with no breaks on the van it was good trying to stop with 1300kg's pushing you.
To Jayco's credit they did fix it all under warrenty on a public holiday and we continued along to darwin. So in saying that i wouldn't by another Jayco I would by a seconed hand Cormoral or Goldstream or an older Jayco They just have a better finish and workmanship.
That is just my opion we may have just got a lemon I've got a mate who swears by his 2006 OFFROAD HAWK it's been everywhere
Hoped this helps and wasn't to biased

Re: New Jayco Outback About To Be Ordered

          Hi Dazz,

We love our Jayco (Eagle Outback) They are a great family camper / Van.

People have taken the Jayco's to some pretty exotic places, and certianly ours has seen many 1,000klms of dirt roads but they are not designed for extreme offroad use.
Perfect for either quick overnight stops, or with the annexe up, great for extended stays as well.

I have no complaints and have had absolutley no problems at all. (I did buy second hand though)

Give serious consideration to including a 12 volt set up (we have solar as well), order a full annexe for extended camping and I like the security of the Tregg hitch as well.

Go over to http://www.myswag.org (surprised Mav didn't point you that way as well) there is a HEAP of Jayco owners there and alot of dicussion on modifications. I have just replced all lighting, internal and external with LED's.

As a parting thought........ ther are VERY good second hand deals around on near new units at the moment. I have seen fully optioned 12 month old setups going for very low $20k's.

Re: New Jayco Outback About To Be Ordered

Friends of ours have fairly recently taken delivery of a Jayco Swan Outback (the biggest one). Looks great and they are enjoying it but there is one issue that has been raised - the inbuilt fridge is not (according to some stickers inside the camper) supposed to be left running when the van is collapsed and on the move. The dealer assured them it would be OK but they're not so sure they'll be covered under warranty if e.g. they leave it running on the move and it overheats or similar. Obviously this isn't ideal as the food could go off if you spend 9 hours on the road in summer.

Something to verify with the manufacturer themselves I guess rather than a dealer... ?

Re: New Jayco Outback About To Be Ordered

              Hi Tileys,

Fridge can most deffinitly be run on 12 volt whilst underway. The warning stickers refer to operating the fridge on gas with th roof down. Similarly, if your friend still has incandecant globes in his overhead lights (I have switched to LED's) always double check these are off before dropping the roof. I have seen many burnt canvas sections from people who forget.
We run the fridge direct from the dual battery in the Prado via an Anderson plug, whilst underway, and switch to gas if we are stopping for more than a day. The AGM battery in our van is topped up from a 100w Solar panel on the roof, but I prefer to lighten the load by switching the fridge to gas for extended stays.

Sig, you will very surprized when I tell you I have negoiated the the oprice down on a brand new Dove Outback to just over $20k. I looked at a 3oth Anniversary 2005 model for 20,500, so I think I have got myself a fair deal.

I totally agree with the stone guard, will be one of the first things that go on.

                            Congratulations on your new baby!

Having just driven 1,500km from Darwin to Alice Springs, it seems that these are VERY popular units. Indeed, a mate in Darwin has recently ordered an Eagle Outback shortly after we got our camper trailer. I told him that I would consider one of these when I'm a little older, have grey hair and receiving a pension

No seriously, these are very nice units. While I envy you - we still love our choice of camper trailer.

Can't wait to see your pics once you get it.

                              G'day Adam,
I ended up getting it from Bayswater. My original choice was Seaford as my father had purchased a number of campers and pop ups from them, but Bayswater just did a better deal.

D4D, I had the tambo for exactly 2 years and got $400 less than I paid for it. The way looked at it was I rented it for 2 years and it only cost me 400 large. It was in excellent condition though. If it rained I would always put it up in the garage to dry properly ready for the next trip. Great jigger for $10k and the workmanship is fantastic compared to others in that price range.
