  • Warn winch vs Ox Hydralic winch

Just about to install a Warn winch but told by a 4x4 nut who also works at at Toyota dealership that the only way to go is with an Ox Hydraulic winch. The principle to me sounds spot on, no worrying about batteries, duty cycles or maintenance. But up until now I have never heard of these hydraulic winches, very interested to know opinions for and against.
    Thanks Ian

Re: Warn winch vs Ox Hydralic winch

I didn't know Shane Warne made winches

I know Ian Hastie from 4x4equip runs an Ox and he loves it however he is an engineer nerd and can fix/fabricate anything

For me it comes down to this simple equation:

Warn's just need battery to winch
    Ox's need motor running

Easier to swap a dead battery in the bush than it is to swap a dead motor...

Re: Warn winch vs Ox Hydralic winch

This topic could end up similar to any tyre debate thread but what the hell .... my thoughts are based on a similar comparision in the marine industry.

Electric easier to mount and power but not really a constant duty option, limited by heat produced and power consumption.

Hydraulic same mounting but more complex to run supply pipes and mount an additional pump or bleed pressure and volume from power steering pump which can make the steering much heavier (non assisted in effect) while winching.
Hydraulic is a constant duty winch, yes you need to run your motor but then with the current draw of a electric winch it would be advisable as well.

So for occasional use (monthly or occassional weekend etc) I think electric is the go but then for more regular use (for work or recovering your mates every weekend :roll go hydraulic.

Thats the approach we use in the marine industry, Pleasure boats use electric winches while the commercial lads usually have hydraulic winches.

Re: Warn winch vs Ox Hydralic winch

I have also read somewhere that when you steer with the hydraulic winch (when winching) the winch cuts out because the steering gets priority over the winch, given its fed from the steering pump.
