Ways to persuade your other half for a new Prado accessory

A common issue I find amongst the topics on this forum is all the difficulty and commotion that goes along with trying to convince your partner why you NEED another accessory for your Prado.

So what I thought might be worthwhile is to create a thread where folks can post what methods they have found useful in getting their other half to loosen the purse strings.

I’ll start with a few that have worked for me:
- Refer to the truck as OUR Prado, not mine.
- Take my ARB catalogue or 4WD Action magazine to bed and ask her what she thinks of various mods or accessories. I figure if she can SEE what I am talking about, or how useful it is, then that justifies the reason why I need it.
- Refrain from commenting on her recent purchases (this is a REAL tough one).
- Talk about the SAFETY aspects of a mod, rather than how awesome it will look!

I just let the wife add to her jewellry and then i get to spend the same on our Prado our my camera.I can just about add another lens to the collection after her last shopping trip

Let her drive...show her other ones like it...let her drive the other rig to see the difference and how to use it. This has worked for me. You never know if you get hurt she may have to use it...that is another good one. :lol:

I had to laugh at this. I guess were all in the same boat.

Ive gone down the safety route a few times and it has worked, but is slowly loosing its effectiveness. :x I like to start talking about it early, and as time passes ramp it up.I find it best to bring these things up when we are driving (usually long distances), at least she cant escape!

I must admit, mine is quite forgiving, I'm just glad she hasn't calculated the total expense over just the last 6 months or so(I don't want to know either)! My last purchase (cargo barrier) was one I did in a moment of weakness which I also used the safety excuse for that one (true though). I must admit, when she saw the rig after the suspension lift she told me her dissatisfaction on how it looked "lifted" with the greater distance under the arches :roll: So I said, don't worry about that hunny, Ill be able to fix that with a new set of A/T 70 series tyres, ill go out and get some pricing next week! :mrgreen: :mrgreen: "OK" she says

you have to barter, the minister for fun and finance wants the house painted so i said i would do it and she replied NO F$%KEN WAY, so i said you can get the house painted buy a painter if i can get a rear locker, she thought for about 2 seconds and said JUST GO AND BLOODY DO IT. ive been doing cartwheels eversince, just need to work out what else i need to barter on . cheers samo :lol: :lol: :wink:

You just have to bide your time for a while, waiting for the moment, then............

............make it sound like her idea, and that its a great idea!!!!

Or, make her think we are the only people on Earth without one of these "must haves"

I have a few other ideas for accessories that probably dont even exist yet, but one day there will be some car or camping accessory that I am going to use the line "yep, I think it makes your bum looks smaller...."

The rack is very useful when we go to Ikea.
Think about how much shopping (80kg) that could go on the rack.
We can bring more of our own stuff/food when going away so we don't have to buy groceries at exorbitant prices in the towns we visit.

For me, getting the rack was pretty painless. My mother-in-law loves the great outdoors and when she comes to visit us from overseas, we intend to take her out to places like Flinders. The next time she comes, we'll have 4 kids of our own and we really need the extra storage up on the roof with 7 on board the Prado.

A very timely thread - just going through this at the moment

My approach is to create some "Peer Pressure" - - - go on a family outing with your friends who have kitted 4WD's and let the wives see the benefits of the lifts/drawers/fridges in your friends' Prado's. Then take the opportunity to talk about it when you stop for a cuppa / lunch etc.

I went on a holiday with two other families recently and this approach worked well - my mate got his wife to agree to a new lift kit after seeing how effective mine is, and I in turn, have been given the green light to acquire rear drawers, cargo barrier and a fridge (after my wide saw how functional/convenient my Mate's 4WD is).

Oh... and another thing... I tend to time my purchases with upcoming 4WD Shows (when the discounts tend to be offered more freely) - that way, I'm not actually spending money, I'm SAVING it :P
