  • 4WD Training Courses in and around Perth

    Hi all

    Have browsed with interest the threads regarding 4WD training courses in other states and am convinced a beginner's course is an absolute must for me.

    Just wondering if any of my fellow Western Australians have attended training courses run by of the following, and whether they would recommend them (or anyone else not listed?)

    * RAC DTEC
    * Eureka
    * WA 4WD Training
    * Australian Explorer

    Cheers

    Jo

    Hi Jo

    and welcome to the forum, there are a few threads floating around on the courses. Here is one that deals with Eureka

    http://www.pradopoint.com/viewtopic....+eureka#p68244

    My wife and I did the Basic course then the Bush and then the Sand one with Eureka. As far as we are concerned they are the best. That said I am aure the others are just as good but I have no experience with them.

    If you want anymore in depth info just PM me

      Hi Jo,
      Another good way of learning 4WD skills is to look at doing tag-a-long tours. Some even have separate training courses on offer. I know you are over in the west but there are several over east, such as Great Divide Tours. Perhaps you could email one and see if they can recommend a company for you.
      Just a thought....
      You're here for a good time, not a long time... Love my Prado...

        Re: 4WD Training Courses in and around Perth

        Having done the Sand and Bush courses with Eureka I'd be happy to recomend them, they were very professional and took the time to explain everything and ensure that everyone had adequate time to build their confidence on each obstacle.

        I haven't done their offroad course, but the onroad training I have done with DTEC (whilst it was part of AHG) was pretty good as well.

        Cheers

          I'll jump on the recommendation for the Eureka training.

          Only one issue with it was the size of the group. Too big if you ask me as when doing the 'exercises' there was a fair amount of waiting around for the whole group to do it.

          The only other thing I would have liked is a bit more info on various recoveries. The only one they did (and most common I suppose) is a snatch strap recovery.

            We just did a Eureka Sand course and found that it was great , Peter took it and he was great , could ask the dumb questions without worrying how you would look, as that is why you are there. Would use then again and have not been with the other mobs but think we will stay with Eureka and can also recommend their Camp Fire Escape Weekends . Our Sand course covered a number of recoveries snatch and also the correct use of maxx traxs. And the Prado was the only car to get up the dunes in one go and the only one to do the tallest dune. cheers Digger

              Re: 4WD Training Courses in and around Perth

              I've made an enquiry about doing the one day 'recreational' course with Eureka to start with, will follow up with the 'sand' and 'bush' courses later on if it's any good.

              For those who have done the Eureka courses, did you take a UHF with you? I see on the website that it is recommended...

                We had a hand held for our courses. I think it is essential but if you don't have one you can rent them.

                  If you are really keen than have a look at the different clubs that are around and what the membership and training costs are. You would be quite surprised to find this considerably cheaper but I also suspect you get better training this way as well, at least in my opinion you would because you are not necessarily limited to a day or weekend training.

                    We took a handheld UHF also.

                    I would say its pretty close to essential. They are used to guide you through various obstacles and also provide for some banter along the way.

                      Did the Eureka course today. All in all it was good fun, and I did learn a bit.

                      However:

                      Would definitely echo this sentiment.

                      15 or 16 cars in all, made for a lot of standing around and waiting - not too much fun in the stinking hot sun.

                      Not sure I will go with them again, purely for this reason. I'd have been prepared to pay more if the group had been smaller.
