Re: Brown Davis Long ranger tanks

I had a Long Ranger in my GQ, Long Ranger is not Brown Davis http://www.thelongranger.com.au. Seemed to be ok, took a serious beating and didn't leak. Had to dick around with the fuel sender to get the gauge reading right but otherwise no issues.

Re: Brown Davis Long Range and Auxiliary Fuel Tanks

Ive got a Brown Davis tank on my Suzuki Vitara for almost 10 years and is far stronger then the factory tank. Its taken quite a beating over the years ive had it and would happy to recommend their tanks anytime. Like anything theses days its worth spending that bit extra to get the warranty and reputation with buying a trusted Australian made product thats suited to our conditions. They made good strong fuel and water tanks that outlast the factory items without a doubt, thats why their still manufacturing theses,

Thank you for the information...they are the only one I can find that make one for the Prado. Does anyone else know who does? Longranger do not.

4WD Action run an ad from 4WD Sytstems in SA that state they have tanks for the 90s, its a 155ltr main tank replacement. Made in Australia but I dont know what brand or if 4wd systems build them. Although if you have a 120 you might only find one manufacturer that makes them,

Re: Brown Davis Long Range and Auxiliary Fuel Tanks

Just rang 4WD systems in SA and they currently don't do one for the 120 and not sure if they will in the future. I enquired because I found some rust patches on the bashplate on my rear tank. So just getting prepared in case I need to reaplce the rear tank... if the factory one is going to cost as much as the Brown Davis, guess which one is going in

                  Edit:
I rang Brown Davis in their Melbourne office to get some information on how the long range tank would work on the fuel gauge.
According to Kevin, the rear tank gets replaced by the long range tank. Fuel gets pumped continuously into the front tank until the rear tank is drained. At this point, the 90L light comes on. So the needle gauge will fall really slowly until the 90L light comes on and then the needle is back to normal.

You should be able to pick up a rear tank quite cheap from a auto gas installer. They take them out of the petrols when they install gas.

There seems to be lots of mixed experiences with Brown Davis (check other forums such as ExplorOz, Overlander). I dealt with them when I bought a replacement tank for my old vehicle. From memory I bought the tank from ORE at a swap meet held in Northbridge a few years ago. They used to sell Brown Davis tanks but no longer did and used the swap meet to off load the last of the left over tanks. It was just the tank and nothing else.

I rang Brown Davis and tried to get the parts needed to complete the installation. The bloke that answered the phone (Mr Davis from memory) must have been at the end of the line when manners were handed out and it seems they ran out before they got to him. He was a nightmare to deal with and had no concept of customer service. After numerous ignored phone calls he finally faxed through a parts list and that was the end of his involvement and he refused any more requests for help (like supply the actual parts needed).

I put it down to me being seen to be more of a nuisance than a valued customer as I hadnt bought the tank from them and was probably seen as trying to fit the tank via the back door. In the end installation became too hard and I sold the tank to someone else. Note to self - my next vehicle will have a large fuel capacity at the time of purchase.

I found out afterwards that my experience with Mr Davis was typical and the company had a bad name for customer service. It was also hinted that one of the reasons ORE stopped selling their products was due to similar problems, but that was only hearsay.

However, it seems that since then a few blokes on here have had positive dealings with Brown Davis (bash plates) so perhaps things have changed and Mr Davis has been moved sideways - or out the door?

Generally their products seem to be OK as long as you can put up with the poor customer service (in the past anyway)
