  • Toyota warranty issues

    G'day all,

Just wondering, with everyone adding bullbars, winches, second batteries ...etc..etc, has anyone had any warranty isuues refused because of "modifications"? Where do we all stand should we have a claim during the warranty period?

    Regards,
    Bazza.

no real issues mate as nothing has broke yet. when i did pick up my vehicle i had to sign a disclaimer that Toyota would not repair anything under warranty if an after market accessory was involved.

Hopefully nothing breaks for me to test that!!

      Re: Toyota warranty issues

I had a warranty issue with the ABS Accutator which they replaced twice. They could see the additional cabling for the air compressor, dual battery, driving lights and checked that to ensure that it was not contibuting to the issue. Modifications should not void warranty unless they are the cause of the issue (eg battery tray for dual battery causing cracking).

        Re: Toyota warranty issues

        Do they really know?

I mean, unless it's an obvious accessory that you have had installed that they would never cater for nor supply then they would probably tell you to go jump. But they might honour your factory warranty on some items that could be either factory installed or owner installed.

I have Hella spotties on my ARB bar. They kindly replaced a blown globe for me during a service. I never mentioned the broken bulb. I knew it was busted and had taken the broken globe out of the spotty so I could go and replace it. Picked up the car and when i went to put the new bulb in I discovered they had beaten me to it. They also replaced a blown fuze on one of my accessory feed lines from the second battery!

If my Bilstein shocks die then I wouldn't expect the dealer to replace those. I have had the entire window tint replaced because the job they (dealer) did was full of bubbles. They sent the car to Tintacar and the whole lot was replaced and done properly. I've also had a split rubber seal replaced under the bonnet. No questions. The service girl understood the problem and it was fixed. The gearbox on my 90 series was rebuilt just weeks before the warranty ended all due to a funny noise. Only cost me a new clutch plate.

And what about all those fleet vehicles or those who salary package a car and get all the goodies added prior to delivery. Many of the accessories are put on by ARB, Jaram, etc. Toyota would obviously fix the problems if they could or send the car over to the installer of those products.

          Re: Toyota warranty issues

I have more modifications and accessories than I can list in a signature but Toyota have honored all the warranty claims I have made which have included:
          Broken left CV.
Replaced all injectors and fuel rail (D4D)
          Replaced water pump.
          Replaced switch in transfer case
          Replaced wiper arms
          Replaced various trim items

Obviously Toyota are not going to warrant any item that was not factory fitted. Nor would I expect them to warrant any non Toyota items even if they were dealer fitted (eg ARB bar).

But just because you have modifications or accessories fitted does not automatically void your warranty on other factory parts. Toyota would have to show how the modification or accessory caused the Toyota part to fail before denying a warranty claim.

            Re: Toyota warranty issues

I reckon it would depend on the individual dealers, and even the individual working on the car.
If the guy is having a bad day he might decide to pick on your modifications.

Best way is to not go too radical on the mods, and make sure it looks professionally done. I do my own wiring for dual batteries etc but make sure that it looks neat and tidy, with flexible conduit and insulation tape etc the same as Toyota's

As for suspension, bullbars etc if you have it fitted with a major vendor like ARB where they have everything engineered, and fit thousands of vehicles at mine sites etc, it would be hard to argue it is not professionally done, especially as mentioned above many Toyota dealers actually use those vendors themselves.
            Cheers, Wayne
