Re: 4wd action tyre comparo
Hi Samo, the Cooper STs did better than alright, by my calculations they were the best tyre by their rating method
, although they never stated that in the article. Ive got the BFGs which if the article is to be believed arent all that good
, poor in mud and in sand. We have Mostly used the BFG,s for outback touring over the last few years with no problems, and the test results would back this up. Anyway the BFGs will no doubt take us to the Cape and back this year, but a Canning trip is on the cards for next year and i reckon a change to coopers may be on the cards. I also wonder about the methodology when the ease of balancing a tyre carries the same amount of "points" as the ability to drive through sand or mud etc.

Re: 4wd action tyre comparo
Having recently upgraded to the ST's...... I was pleased with the result
BUT.....I have to disagree, my old Cooper ATR's were a FAR better tyre on soft sand than the ST's..... The ST's are prone to digging themselves in a bit deep if you let them.Rob

Re: 4wd action tyre comparo
I've got Mickey Thompson ATZs and saw the results for these which sucked but then I read they only tested the older 5 rib and not the newer 4 rib. The older is like the Coopers ATR while the 4 rib is a cross between AT and MT but closer to AT. Was disappointed that the 4 rib didn't get a jursey.Nick

Hi Samo,
I notice in the same issue, the write up on the new 150GXL and took particular note of the comment "The new Prado made mincemeat of the older model" just wondering if youv'e ever met the guy that was driving the 120 series :wink:yeah ya right matt you need your locker on and in low range to get as far as mine with the centre diff not even locked in, poor choice in tyres as 4x4 action says cheers samo

Re: 4wd action tyre comparo
I think they gave the cooper ST's an accurate assesment. Mine chipped quite badly just driving on a dirt road. Even with lowered tyre pressures, the first time I did a bit of decent off roading, the side lugs pretty much tore off. On road they dont give you a lot of confidence in the wet. I wont recommend or buy coopers again.
I have a couple of mates who run the new BF's and both like them. One drives his cruiser like he stole it and the other cruiser is kept in immaculate condition. The BF's are quiet, for a muddie, dont seem to chip easy and grip very well on all surfaces.

Re: 4wd action tyre comparo
Yeah. I'm not surprised by the GU Patrol comment. 4X4 Action seems to worship them, without fail, every time. Not a long time reader of 4x4 Action but I've really noticed it. Guess their "Nissan Action" offshoot kinda lets the cat out of the bag on their feelings too....
They simply couldn't bag the 150 in any way, shape or form. Otherwise no interest from Toyota next time around. It was up to 4X4 Action to engineer ways to say something good about it.
The whole tyre debate is very frustrating. Some people say Cooper tyres chip badly without much effort, and it is really only their pushy advertising campaign that has raised their profile in Australia. Others swear they are the best tyre they have ever fitted.
About the only consistent message I find is that BFG's are 'ok'. Nothing particularly special but no major issues to report. Pick one and run with it. What else can you really do. Re: 4wd action tyre comparo
On second set of BF Goodrich All Terrains. First set lasted 80,000 km with a very hard 10,000 km causing a lot of wear early on. Never had a problem with them at all. The second set have now done about 20,000 km and still look untouched. This includes a couple of heavily loaded trips but not on the extremely rocky type of tracks encountered with the first set (Sturts Stony Desert). Virtually everyone I know with a 4WD use BFG A/T and none of have had problems.
I am about to read the article, will see if it is fair. However, I am not convinced that these people know all that much about 4WDs as they do things that I (as a one-time professionaly 4WDriver for work) would never consider a good idea and seem to be coloured by sponsorships etc.Michael and Kelly

Re: 4wd action tyre comparo
Only going on what I seen on the weekend

Dual locked hilux with 31" BFG at's, needed winching up this clay incline.

Not clearing this mud....
Other vehicles got up unlocked.
I don't like cooper ST's either as I have had chipping and torn lugs.
I bought them as an allrounder and was disappointed- returned to MT's and put up with the noise.
Currently running MTR kevlar and having a very good run- quieter and better onroad handling then MTZ's

Re: 4wd action tyre comparo
The tyre debate continues...... All tyres are compromises. I take all of these articles with a grain of salt, don't believe everything you read. I fail to see how 4WD action can rate a tyre on how hard they are to ballance. Why is this important ? , unless the fitter could not ballance the tire. In there own article there tyre fitter said that all the tyres were within an acceptable ballancing range.
In some peoples minds, you are not worthy unless you are driving a live axle 4wd. Unless you are into comp trucks you dont really need live axles. Many a IFS and IRS 4wd will go 99% of places people will want to go.....if you can drive well enough.
I have owned a patrol, and sold it to end up in a prado, I know when it comes time to replace my 95s prado I will look at a newer model prado as its replacement.
While any reporter is sponsored, they will always try to "sell" the featured product. Its amazing how loyalties can change quickly depending on the pay cheque. Some Magazines are just one big advertisement.....Buy Buy Buy...
One thing I will agree on is the problem of tread chipping on Cooper ST's off road, regardless of changing pressures. On road in the wet also is interesting... sometimes scary. I certainly did not have this problem with BFG M/T's, or A/T's.Work is interrupting time for Trips and Mods

Re: 4wd action tyre comparo
Only major issues I have come across with the old BF muddies was with the 35in tyre, they would puncture the side wall easy or would tear on the little side lugs through the carcass, but the 33in ones I had were near indestructable. Ran the 33's on two different 4wds then sold them to a mate who had them for a couple of years. Time will tell if the new design muddies are as good.
