I hope I'm not missing something, but can someone point out to me where in the Tyre Comparo they mention what pressure they ran the tyres at over the various surfaces?

I would be thinking that running each individual tyre at the correct pressure would dramatically influence the performance of that tyre over the various surfaces. As far as I can tell, this is the greatest downfall in the article and makes the results crap.

I was surprised they had Cooper ATR's in the highway tyre section. I thought they were All Terrain tyres!!

I have now done 10,000kms on my Cooper ST tyres and are unhappy about the amount of chipping on them.

I was surprised they had Cooper ATR's in the highway tyre section. I thought they were All Terrain tyres!!

ATR is an acronym for All Terrain Reinforced but the tread pattern is more like a tradditional road/highway tyre, in fact the tread pattern is almost identical to the Dunlop Grandcrap. That being said one of the vehicles that I travelled with over the Simpson and down to Innaminka with last year had ATRs on his 2005 120 Grande and did not have any problems with the tyres at all




The shoulder is a lot more square than the Dunlop and the tread depth leaves it for dead but there is a noticable simillarity in the tread pattern. Both are five rib to reduce noice. Small blocks and plenty of rubber in contact with the ground. They will both block up if you show them a bit of mud, etc...

Exactly what I thought when I read the article.
Some tyres will require less pressure to bag out the required amount simply due to their construction. Doesn't make it a better or worse tyre

With this in mind (appropriate inflation for particular tyres) just how well do BFG ATs handle sand & mud? I don't think anyone would expect them to have the same performance as muddies but are they otherwise quite effective?

Also: noone's yet given a first hand experience of the new BFG muddies. Are they really as good an all-round tyre as the article suggests?

I have BFG AT's and can't report any problems with them in sand - I normally run them around the 16psi mark. On the road they grip well and minimal road noise if you ask me. Plenty more positive comments about the BFG AT's in the tyre section on here.

At no point did they make any reference to changing pressures.
in prevous comparo's they have made reference to different tyre constructions "bagging" differently at different pressures.
This also depends of vehicle weights.
In all of their articles and DVD's they make Significant references to tyre presures and how important they are. Seems like tyre pressures was not as importand in this article, as how much weight each tyre it took balance .

The only true test of traction between tyres, Regardless of construction/pattern is to measure and match "tyre contact patch" (By adjusting pressures the contact patch changes, by adjusting pressures for each tyre to make contact patches match, then an accurate comparison can be drawn.) Pressures should also be adjusted according to terrain, to gain maximum traction. But this is something we all already know (right?).
If all the tyres tested had identical "contact patches" during the testing, then some accurate outcomes could occour.

Well I'm glad I'm not the only person who noticed the absence of tyre pressures from this test, and so from this I thought I would email the editorial team (which I did on 22/MAR/2010), and despite 3 'read receipts', no response as yet - maybe they are all sitting around the office going "Hmmm..., how did we miss this one?".

What gets me is that also in the mag, they go on and on about 'send me an email and tell me what ya think' - looks like they only want to hear the good stuff!

I have worked in around around the tyre industry for many years and to find a tyre that all people like is near imposible, use a tyre that you know will suit your application.
I am now running the new BFG Mud Terrain KM2 i just did west coast of tassie it was wet, boggy, rocky and tyres were awesome and for a mud tyre very quiet.

Is this on a Prado? What size are you running?

Hi Ya, 265/70R17 IN th BFG, I import many wheels from OS and Flew this size in form one of my suppliers. They are perfect I landed them for about $430 a Tyre...

I just spent the Easter weekend with the Jeep clubs of Australia in their annual Camp Coffs. As it was Jeeps only, I was a passenger. I got the chance to get an idea of how well some tyres performed in the rocky and clay hill courses up the back of Coffs. Most ran BFG KM2's and Mickey Thompson MTR's or Claws. All went very well. There were a few other brands but a noticeable lack of Coopers. One guy had the new Wranglers which seemed to be a hybrid between a rugged mud tyre and an ATR. The tyre has 4 bands of lugs, with the inner ones (closest to the vehicle) being closer spaced making them more suited to road and gravel, with the outer 2 (away from the vehicle) being much wider spaced to suit rock and mud work. The driver said they were much quieter than muddies and handle well on the road, wet and dry, and seemed to do well in the mud and rocks. They are definatley worth a look.

Something else I noticed about the 4wd action story, is the winner of the previous ATR comparo (the Pirelli Scorpians) didn't rate it for this comparison. Why not put your best foot forward ?

ive had cooper st,atr, bf goodrich ats , the bfs would be the worst in the mud, im running km2s at the moment, only done 2000kms at the moment seem pretty good so far no quiter than the st coopers as far as im concerned, why didnt they put in the new cooper ltz? im sure more people would want to know what the new tyres \were going to do, got to be a set up :P :P
