Prado radio interference.

I have a Prado 150 i want to fit out. I started out by putting in a dual battery system and wiring in the back to run my autofridge which is a compressor fridge. When i turn the fridge on i get very bad interference on the radio both am and fm.
Has anyone ever had this problem and if so how to rectify.

Where is the FM aerial located in the 150? On the 120 it is in one of the rear windows. To me it sounds like the motor is emitting interference with the areial. Try locating the fridge else where and see if you get the same sort of interference with the radio. Also how new is the fridge since none of them should really have any impact like that.

Most likely the wrong thread for this GX has the Aerial in one of the rear side windows while the GXL and above have it on both rear side windows (FM Diversety Antenna)

It would depend if your radio is getting directly radiated interference from the fridge motor or if it is radiating back along your 12V power lines. You can get ferrite "chokes" to put in the power lines, or maybe just try relocating the power line.
If the fridge compressor or electronics is radiating RF directly into the air there's probably not a lot you can do. ( other than get the fridge checked out coz it seems excessive ).
You could try earthing the fridge body to the car body via a bit of copper braid or similar, and see if that helps.

What brand of fridge is it ? I've had HF radio interference from my Waeco CF40 and was told recently by a Waeco repair agent that there's a shield that should be fitted to the control box which is at one end of the fridge at the bottom .

Sorry about the delay in responding,but in answer to your responce and questions about my problem.The fridge is an autofridge but i also have a weaco fridge which gives me the same problem,i have moved them away from the antena window with no luck. I will try to isolate the compressor with aluminium foil. I dont use it every day, so it will take me a bit of time to do this.Also have been in touch with Toyota with the responce "it is just one of those things".

I have an ARB fridge fitted in the back. I also notice the drop in clarity when the fridge is running. Does anyone have a solution to this?

I have the same problem in my 120 GXL with the CF50 Waeco. The interference is so loud we turn the radio off when the fridge motor kicks in. I wasn't aware the aerials were located in the rear side windows but that being the case it means the fridge is located smack between the two which probably exacerbates things. I asked an auto electrician about it and he suggested putting an in line suppressor in the positive lead from the battery to the fridge. He suggested the 12 Volt Shop in Perth might have them but I haven't got up there yet. Anyone done this?

I had the same problem on both my old 120 series and new 120 series. I have an Engel fridge and fitted an earth wire to the back of the fridge and this has fixed the problem in both vehicles. Don't know about other models of fridge but the Engel has a spot next to the power plug to connect an earth wire.
