Hi all. Can anyone recommend somewhere to do a 4wd course in Melbourne. I have just bought my first 4wd (150 series prado), and keen to get it dirty. I read somewhere that best place is to join a club and do a course through there. Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

Re: 4wd training course
Best way is to join a club, we're in the Paj club (you don't need a Paj to join). You get to meet some great people and they have varying levels of training courses. The Paj club is family focused with many easy to moderate trips. Unlike some clubs who cater for the hardcore guys.

Re: 4wd training course
Hi Antiquesman
I agree with both solutions, I would do the training cousre first as some clubs require this before you can go on their trips. Depending on what you are looking to do, look for a club that is family orientated, its pretty easy to guage them by going to one of their monthly meetings. We have made some life long friends from these clubs.
Also if you are interested have a look at www.drive4life.com.au we have done the Victorian High Country and Simpson Desert trips with them and it is a great way to do some touring without the organisation hassles. And the $1000.00 entry fee is totally tax deductable as it is a donation to charity. We are doing the trip in October.

Re: 4wd training course
Make sure you do a 'nationally recognised' course which I don't believe the course offered by Melb 4x4 is

The best training I got was by joining a club and going on trips with experienced, sensible members, some who have been 4Wding for 20 years. You get real world experience of situations you would rarely encounter on a short training course. Peruse the websites of various clubs and look for a medium sized family oriented club that runs plenty of trips. ( avoid the gung-ho hard trip only ones ). The Pajero club mentioned above is a good example. ( I am in a similar club ). Then go along to the monthly meeting of a few ( doesn't cost anything ) and see if you like the "vibe".Cheers, Wayne

Re: 4wd training course
Hi, I agree with going the club route, most run nationally regognised courses which are are very useful for learning correct, and safe ways to do things such as recoveries etc. What you learn in the course however pales into insignificnce with what you can learn from going on trips with older members who have been 4Wdriving for 20, 30, 50 or more years. Not just driving techniques, but repairs, places to travel, things to avoid. the accumulated knowledge in the members of our 4WD club means that whatever you want to do, or wherever you want to go, someone can give you the "good oil" because they have been there and done that 8)

Re: 4wd training course
Hi, I am the Toyota Landcruiser Club in Sydney, and they run a very good training course. Its a VETAB accredited and involves a night of theory and a weekend of driving and its free when you join the club. I would think the Toyota Landcruiser Club in Melbourne would run a similar course.Steve
