I thought with all the experienced people here I could get a Idea of what you consider the best
12V portable compressor ! regards Drecked >>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>> By the way
the only one I have seen is a TJM one from 4WD megastores with 5 year guarantee which
sounds reasonable and they say it's a good one > (of cause)

I think the new model ARB has been tested as the best bang for buck and a reliable unit.
2008 Diesel Prado with extra stuff added. I drive it on the road and other places too.

I like the idea of the ARB just because you can buy parts separately and they are completely rebuildable.

No idea how good it is compared with others as I haven't owned any others.

        Re: 12 v portable compressor

I bought the Bushranger Auto Max Air from one of the BNE 4x4 shows a few years back and used it 6 or so times before I had the rear locker installed. Rather than fiddling with the Bushranger to operate the locker I had the ARB one fitted.

        Regards inflating tyres...
I'd say the Bushranger did the job a bit more effortlessly than the ARB one does. Now, whether that's because the Bushranger was connected directly to the battery when it was being used and the ARB one is wired in the cargo area of the Prado... I don't know. The ARB one labours occasionally on the cooper ST's but didn't bat and eyelid when I pumped up a friends HT's last weekend.

        Having said that...
I prefer the tyre connector that the ARB one has over the gun/gauge style one that the Bushranger uses.
        Cheers, Leon

          Re: 12 v portable compressor

I have the new ARB one, and it easily does everything I need. I usually have to go from 10 psi to 40 psi, and its great for that.

My only reluctance was the plastic box it comes in. I need to be able to use it in my Hilux Dual Cab as well, and it doesnt fit behind the rear seat, where keep recovery gear, jumper leads, hoses, belts etc etc.

Nothing wrong with quality of box, in fact its quite good, but I think they are missing out on some of the Dual Cab 4x4 market.

If installing on the vehicle, then not a problem.

Must keep engine running whilst using, to ensure you get max performance from running with full charging voltage.
          Cheers

I have just bought a ARB one in the box based on the reviews. Very happy with it so far. Pumped up 8 tyres from 25 to 40 with no problems after a trip to Bribie the other weekend. ( I was finished all 8 before the guy near us had done 4 with a supercheap type one) It sure got hot though!

My ARB one has done more than it's fair share of work over the past 11 years but it's starting to take longer to get the job done now. I think it's time for an upgrade. The newer model pumps about 3 times the air of my old model.

Has anyone tried one of Derek's air compressors from ABR http://www.sidewinder.com.au/page154aa.html Sidewinder? It looks like a good portable unit, has some good write ups elsewhere etc.

                      Yes

I have one and been using it for some time, it has no problems pumping any size tyres up.
The one issue I have with it is the guage that you can turn around to let air out of the tyre with, it is sometimes hard to stop it from letting air out when you are pumping up. I will replace it when i get a chance and probably get one of ARB's EZ deflators.
