Hello all. This is my first post.
Background - for 10 years, 1995 - 2005, my wife and I toured Australia in a 80 series petrol Landcruiser towing a 20 feet Hallmark Grand deluxe Mark3 caravan. A great rig. We had wonderful experiences. Thinking we had seen it all we sold the lot - walk in/walk out.
Current - Now we want to go caravanning again but I am reluctant to buy another Landcruiser 100 or 200 series. We plan to use the van more for "stays" than "touring" although some touring will continue. However, the tow vehicle will also have to be used for city commuting so fuel costs are an issue.
We are looking at the current model Prado GXL or low kilometre 2008 Grande. Strong preference for petrol rather than diesel despite fully understanding the fuel consumption issue. Both petrol and diesel models are rated to tow max. of 2500kgs. However, NRMA, Drive.com, etc road tests on Prado state that they struggle when laden. We propose buying a caravan weighing around 2000kgs which after loading food, clothes, gas, water, etc, etc will weigh around 2500kgs.
So my question is directed to those who have actually done what we propose to do. What is your experience in towing this weight van with a Prado?
Thanks, in anticipation. roseville200
