Hi all,
Late last year, the media reported on the USD$1B counterfeit car parts industry based in the Middle East. I have just received an email from an eBay seller (partsfield_com in Box Hill, Victoria) advising that an oil filter I purchased from them last year was likely counterfeit. I am not after the "should've gone genuine" brigade to respond here, but i do have a question or two for the mechanically minded.
I purchased the filter for not much less than what it would have cost at Toyota from an eBay seller with a long history of very high customer satisfaction ratings and a wide inventory of car parts. The page described them as genuine, they came in "genuine" packaging with holograms intact etc. In other words they were a sophisticated copy. The filter has been on the vehicle for 8,000km and it has not had any issues so far. The vehicle is a 2010 1KD-FTV with ~140K on the clock. Injectors were done at ~120K km.
1. Can I remove it immediately and replace, without changing the oil? (I am very time poor at the moment unfortunately, but the car doesn't do many km)
2. Can i leave it another 2,000km until the next service given that there hasn't been any issue so far?
3. Do I need to change the oil and filter immediately?
4. What would the symptoms of poor oil filtration be?
Many thanks. I hope that not too many of you on here are similarly affected.
