  • 2018 - Running In

I pick up my new 2018 VX and was wondering whether there is any need to “run in” a new car these days?

Should I drive it as I normally would?

How have you run in your new Prado?
2009 Prado 120 D4D, Silver, ARB Deluxe Winch Bar, IPFXS, Safari snorkel, diff breathers, OME, GME UHF, Warn Winch, ARB portable compressor, OEM Towbar, Tekonsha brake controller, tinted windows

I have a 2018 GX with about 800 km on the odometer. Despite the salesperson saying no "breaking-in" was required, the Owner's Manual says:

    Breaking in your new Toyota
To extend the life of the vehicle, observing the following precautions is recommended:
    • For the first 300 km: Avoid sudden stops.
    • For the first 800 km: Do not tow a trailer.
    • For the first 1000 km:
      • Do not drive at extremely high speeds.
      • Avoid sudden acceleration.
      • Do not drive continuously in the low gears.
      • Do not drive at a constant speed for extended periods.
For me, the "Do not drive at a constant speed for extended periods" is the only one I felt I had to worry about. Didn't worry that much though.

This is a funny one isn't it!
It comes with 0w-30 fully synthetic oil in it, and they don't change it for the first 10,000km. That tells me that there is very little 'running in' to be done on the engine. (else they'd put a mineral oil in it initially)
I just drove as I would normally, but avoided the long constant speed as per Grinbot.
So long as they're not too short (need everything up to temperature), I think city driving is actually a good break in. Lots of different speeds, different revs, and loads.

I've done 6000km now and no adverse affects by driving it normally.

PS - I'm not an expert on oil or running things in!

As a comparison, I had a BMW motorcycle that came with mineral oil from the factory, and they changed to Synthetic at 20,000km - That's running in!
