We have settled on the Idea of a roof top tent and batwing awning. June is coming up soon and that means "CAPE YORK". Having seen the quality and ease of use I can't help but like the Alu-Cab Gen3 expedition tent. Would need to take out a second mortgage given the price tag but can rationalise the purchase on the dream of years of touring, Kimberley, Canning need I go on. So any thoughts welcome re any good or bad experience with All-Cab. Particularly how has it stood up to corrugations and such.

Haven't had any experience with the Alu-Cab but have a James Baroud on the top of mine which is a similar concept, still a bit pricey but so convenient. All I have to do when I rock up to a campsite is make sure I have a flat patch to park the car and I'm good to go. Takes less than 20 seconds to pop up and no longer than 1 minute to put down, and the alu-cab actually looks easier to set up and pack away.
Have to admit I do feel pretty smug when I'm the last person to rock up to a campsite after enjoying the day exploring and I'm all set up unpacked and cooking dinner in about 5 minutes, and I can sleep in in the morning give everyone else a head start and can still pack up and be the first one off in the morning.
I would definitely choose the Pop up style rooftoppers over the fold out tents especially after seeing all the people with the rental 4wd's equipped with the fold out ones do all there mucking around every time they need to set up camp, admittedly it would get easier with practice. I have used both styles and couldn't see myself going back to a fold out one.

Doesn't exist! Even caravans require stabilisers etc to be set. Me.....touring tent as above for 2min setup as well as a rear fold camper...... Also 2mins. With most things camping it is the pack up that takes time folding etc. If you go rooftop check this carefully (and hope you don't need to drive for a case of beer while set up)

I have an Oztent RV5. Stunning tent, and we all know how easy it is to put up. HOWEVER - I can't get it on my Roof rack - it simply is too heavy. My suspension is lifted too - so its frigging impossible for me to get up there.
I invested in the Alucab Gen3 RTT. I think they are unbelievably overpriced. Having said that - here in South Africa (they are a South African company) I don't think there is a better option. And the other clam shells are just slightly cheaper. The ladder is very heavy - I replaced mine with a telescopic ladder (they put the brackets on it for me)
One other thing - the shadow awning from Alucab is rated as the best on the market in South Africa as well. Also the most expensive.
Alucab has grown very big and don't even do custom installations anymore - their product is now only available at one local shop (4x4megaworld)
