  • Off-road trailer plans

I am investigating building an off-road camper trailer and looking at buying the plans online as a starting point. Anyone dealt with this business? Any feedback welcome.

I will be modifying the plans to use independent suspension, adding more storage and a hard-shell RTT but thought this is a well priced starting point for the plans.

    Cheers and TIA

    Hi Whynot
I like the look of the plans, they come as a PFD is that so?
Probably good value, at least you have a reference to check on.
I don't know if the plans will give you axle position for weight distribution, but what gets added to the build will effect handling.
Think about your wish list of fit outs / attachments, eg spare wheel carrier, storage as you have stated, water tank including filler, fuel can holders, gas cylinders, jockey wheel, lights, stabilizers, bike rack, battery mounting, brake type, hitch options, well you know what I mean.
Also nice to have trailer wiring concealed within the trailer frame or tube, this can be a bit of an exercise but worth it not to have to worry about hook ups.
Being able to rotate your trailer during fabrication makes the job a whole lot easier, the little bit extra time to set up a rotisserie will pay you back with comfortable welding positions.
This goes back to the rebuild of our own camper trailer.
Had some material in stock that I made into a couple of frames like an engine stand. One has a 50mm tow ball and the other I mounted a bearing block to an angle iron bracket that clamped to the trailer frame. With the trailer hitch as the pivoting point, a 360 deg. rotation was achievable.
Its always good to be starting a new project, working back to a point you are happy with on some one else's can be a drag.
Oh just another thought. Stick with the same width or wheel track as your tow vehicle, makes traversing off road tracks simpler.
I measured the rear brake rotor rim mounting face across the Prado when doing a wheel rotation recently and convinced myself that this figure would be able to be put into the equation when determining correct axle length for track width.
    Cheers
    Troy
