  • Mysterious 120 series engine issues

Hello all - first post and seeking advice from experienced Prado owners. I have an '08 120 series Prado Grande. Prior to Christmas, whilst towing caravan, vehicle went into 'limp' mode on multiple occasions and the problem was identified as contaminated fuel resulting in the installation of all new injectors, fuel lines and fuel filter. Manifold was removed and completely cleaned out, EGR checked, valve clearances checked, compression checked. All appeared ok. Recently experienced some rough idling and booked car in for 200,000 klm service. Service completed however, rough idle continued. Back to mechanic who checked cylinder feedback values and number 3 above limits. Injectors in 3 & 4 were swapped and problem (cylinder value above limit) transferred to cylinder 4. Another new injector was installed on cylinder 4 and all values within limits. Next morning, cylinder values showed problem had returned to cylinder 3. Idle problem was intermittent at this point, however generally idling in neutral and in-gear around 700RPM. No noticeable decrease in power whilst driving. Went for 700klm run and noticed that the car, under acceleration, worked well however, around 110kph I would take foot of accelerator and the speed would rapidly decrease. Once down to 100kph (and no accelerator applied) the motor would "shift up" into top gear. Once acceleration re-applied, motor would "shift down" and normal operations would continue. Today I had the injector in cylinder 3 replaced again with another new injector however, cylinder 3 still giving feedback value outside of limit (+5). No error codes showing either on dash or using code reader and am scratching head as to what the issue causing this may be. ANY IDEAS OR ADVICE?? Would appreciate any thoughts or assistance. Thanks

    Hi there,
Sounds like you are having problems with the injectors.Did you fit after market injectors. Also did you replace all the injectors and , did your mechanic check the fuel pressures.
If you are in Melbourne speak to MTQ fuel injection in Dandenong , they are specialists in this field.

    Good luck.

Thanks Mr Reliable. Have quality checked all injectors, fuel lines and filters, none are after market, and all okay. All injectors were replaced at the same time. Fuel pressures all good. Had compression check in all cylinders done today and all within spec. Turns out both of my active engine mounts have had it and have arranged for both to be replaced in a couple of days. Once diagnosed, I checked this forum and found multiple posts regarding this problem in 120 series prados anywhere between 5,000 klm right through to 25,000 klms. Guess I am lucky as mine has just had its 200,000klm service. I am led to believe that the 'rattle' of the engine due to these faulty mounts can have a bearing on the ECU/Injectors leading to the rough idle and rattle I have been experiencing. This may also account for the cylinder feedback values that have been recorded recently however, these were not reflected in todays compression test. Glad I am now facing a $650 repair bill rather than a $5K cylinder replacement or a $20K 'long' motor replacement.
