  • Injector issue

I own a 2008 120 series Prado D4-D. I read an article in the latest Courier Mail that gave me cause for concern. It appeared in the Motoring section and read "you don't have to look far on Toyota forums to find injector issues in 3 litre D4-D diesels commonly caused by poor fuel quality or fuel pressure problems". It followed a question by an owner who after 130,000 km on the clock had 2 new injectors blown and caused significant damage. Is there some issue with the factory fitted injectors I should be aware of. Haven't experienced any issues yet but I am a bit concerned.

It's a known fault with them- A grain of salt needs to be taken as there are some legitmate things to remember. Firstly, There are far more vehicles in circulation with the D4D engine than any other engine from any competitor, it's fitted to the Hilux, Prado, Hiace and Rav4 (all top selling cars in their various class segments)- This means that you're going to hear a lot more people having issues just due to the sheer fact that there's so damn many of them. Secondly, dirty fuel will kill any modern common rail diesel (and do the same or give serious issues to any old diesel for that matter as well). Diesel engines as a rule are more susceptible to bad fuel than petrols, although any engine with injectors (read all modern ones) won't be thrilled being presented bad fuel. A modern common rail diesel engine runs incredible pressure in the rail (upwards of tens of thousands of PSI) and parts contained therein require diesel to lubricate them- Bad fuel can block acccess or improperly lubricate these parts leading to rapid potentially catastropic failure. Living on the coast means that bad fuel is almost a non issue, and if you're travelling then keep an eye on the fuel you're putting in and consider installing a secondary filter.

Having your car serviced according to manufacturers specification is important to detect any problems before they become serious- replace fuel filters and oil filters as required and you will more than likely enjoy many years of happy motoring- Cars equipped with the D4D engines do hard miles on farms and minesites everyday (and have done for over a decade and a half). Remember that people who have a problem will write something about it- Most people with these engines will never have serious problems and will get years of service from them. Steering clear of remaps and chips that boost performace is a good way of avoiding issues, as is performing regular servicing and maintenance.

I have a 2013 KDJ 150R Prado bought new and serviced by top mechanic as per factory requirements. Most use is towing a 1.6 ton camper trailer. Very happy with the vehicle till now. Major failure at 66,000 k, #1 injector and subsequent piston crack. Not impressed I can tell you. Engine rebuild is likley to cost $7-8k, I believe TMC are helping with the parts. I have completed the survey form on this site and note the commonality of this issue. I am told by a local dealer service manager that service customers get help whereas this is not the case for me.
Any advice/comment from the members would be welcome.
