Awaiting my '18 GXL delivery now and this starts to make me panic.
Toyota are experiencing issues be it minor or catostrophic yet seem to be ducking and weaving when it comes to standing by the product. The issues that some experience with 1KD engines demonstrate Toyota lack of commitment beyond warranty. The frustration for their customers is that we all expect that an engine should last 200k or more km with minimal regular servicing and part replacement.
Other manufacturers take it on the chin and warrant their product even after the warranty expired.
I can testify that Mazda are one of the good guys. Recently we had a catostrophic failure in a CX5 Diesel engine at 158000km. and 3 years out of warranty. Car towed to our Mazda dealer and without us even having to ask, the dealer arranged through Mazda Australia a new complete engine replacement, both turbos replaced, new injectors and glow plugs. It was suggested that the cost was around $15000 yet we were never asked to contribute.
My suggestion for your new Toyota if intending to own beyond 3 years, is ensure you get the extended factory warranty for a bit of insurance, that is what I did for my Prado.

We bought a new 120 diesel in 2007 ,injectors had death rattle in 2013 dealer replaced, way out of warranty no issues couldn't fault Toyotas commitment , loved that car.
Changed to new VX in March and bought extended 3 year warranty for $1,200 after reading the fine print carefully .
Just towed 2.2 ton van for 4.000k no issues , but not in love with the leather seats, velour seats in old GLX were far better.
