How to stop plastsic fuel can lid from leaking?

Hi,

I have some of the Supercheap plastic fuel cans but it seems to me that no matter how tightly I do up the lids they always leak fuel.

I have a couple of different makes, but they all seem as bad as each other.

Has anyone come up with a way to stop this happening?

I have 3 x 20L, and a few 5 and 10 litres and none have ever leaked. I always take a 20L in the bow of the boat offshore which gets stored on its side and bashed around in big seas, never had a drop of fuel in the bilge. I use them for the ride-on, motor bikes, the smaller ones for 2 stroke mixes for the chainsaws etc and never a leak. If i leave them in the sun they will puff up and even the flat bottom will round because nothing gets out of them.

Have you tried this style of container?

Those cheap jerry cans all seem to leak- Probably a combination of crappy tolerances in the molds and the use of shitty O rings.

Like Atherton said it’s likely to do with the oRing. However perhaps put a bit less fuel in the jerry can to allow for heat and expansion. Try replacing the orings in the lid & you can find a replacement. Alternatively rip the oring out and smear some sikka flex in the top of lid (clean the lid first) to replace the oRing and let it dry.. Or Maybe load up the thread with plumbers Teflon thread tape it might help reduce the tolerance gaps in the thread?
