  • iPhone Apps for travelling - what do you have?

Ok, the Geek in me is stepping forward.

For a long time I avoided the iPhone, but when the 3GS hit the market I jumped on board and haven't looked back.

As there are "eleventy-seventy" plus apps out there and finding one that is worth grabbing can be a prick, I thought I see what people are using on their iPhone for travel.

I will kick things off, keeping it simple, App and purpose.

1.Pocket Weather AU - Weather App with tidal info (got it primarily for the tidal info)
    2. Oz Weather - Easy App for checking weather (got it before Pocket Weather and still use it most of the time)
    3. Metroview Australia - TTS (Text to Speech) navigation application (similar to Tom Tom and Navman but much cheaper and not as 'flashy' interface). Able to enter favorites, address, suburb, re-route ability etc.
    4. uTrackMe - GPS location updated to a web server (I use this through ExplorOz)
    5. Motion-X GPS - GPS application that can have GPX files upload to it. Also has GPS, Compass, Waypoint and track recorder functions.
6.FuelFinda - find nearby fuel stations by name (Caltex, BP etc)
    7. NRMA Assist - Application for requesting NRMA assistace to your location using the GPS.
    8. ATM Hunter - Find a nearby ATM by bank type.

I have used every app except for the NRMA Assist app and been very satisfied with all of them.

Re: iPhone Apps for travelling - what do you have?

I splashed out and bought the TomTom app, works out good value as my wife also has an iPhone so it is like getting 2xGPS for $99.00.

I also use DayTides for out on the boat and checking tides when on the beach.

For photography on the go, I use AutoStitch and CropForFree.

Re: iPhone Apps for travelling - what do you have?

I have the clinometer on the IPOD touch but find the text too small for my 40+ year old eyes. I need my reading glasses to read it. The bigger rolling pictures are useless as my common sense tells me in which direction the car is leaning. You need to read the actual degrees for it to have any real value. I read somewhere that the Prado can do 43 degrees in any direction. (in stock form) It does give you confidence to see what you thought was a serious downhill is only 20 something degrees.

The best travel App I've got is the Mileage Calculator, just type in the Km's since your last refuel and how many letres you just put in and it gives you your mileage. Good for people like me who don't understand basic maths :? Another App I have sensors when you make a gear change and makes the sound of a Turbo Blow Off Valve. Not so good in the Prado(auto) but works well in the misses Subaru, the noise drives her up the wall though. :x

I use my PDA mostly for navigation but on my iPhone I have (and love)

                        Sygic (Mobile maps)
                        MotionX GPS
                        Oz Weather
                        Fuel Log 3

Such a great toy, shame it's an average phone.

I'll stick with my Blackberry =P

Not heaps of apps yet in Australia but they'll get there.

A phone too? Come on, asking a bit much aren't we? :P

I don't think it was ever designed with the primary function being a phone but rather a PDA type devise with greater versatility.

Must say though, following the iOS4 upgrade some of the apps have improved greatly. Motion-X is such an awsome app, love the photo tagging, plt/gpx/kml track and waypoint import and export (I use gpsvisualiser to do the coversions, take seconds). And being able to export tracks and photo tags to google maps is a great way to save them. Not bad for a couple of dollars till I get the tax done for the new GPS.

For those that want a little fun on their trips I'll also recomment the Geocaching app. I am new to the world of geocaching and only located my first cache yesterday. Unfortunately it is in a very public place and I wasn't able to retrieve it without giving up it's location. But a number of tracks we are planning on driving soon have nearby caches wich we will try and log whilst out and about.

Also wanted an app that I could simply log and generate a report on the kms I travel for work for tax. I got Travelog which seemed to be the simplist for of the app I could find that generates good reports.
