    GPSed.
it can track your journey, and when you get home, upload the data.
same as what McBain used to track the day trips on the 2010 GTG.

MotionX will show as much detail as you can see on Google/Bing Maps with the Terrain turned on etc. I believe this is the same with most apps. I believe mudmap allows you do download different maps to it like the 1:25k topos etc.

Don't know if I could bring myself to spend that much on an app to be honest.

Re: iPhone Apps for travelling - what do you have?

Anyone tried "Bit Map" for topo maps?

I have managed to get the NSW 1:100K topo maps from Festy (free!) installed - well all but one of the 600 odd maps - for some reason one didn't work.

But I can't get the VIC 1:25K topo maps from Festy to work.

For these maps they need to be imported as a zip file. It works for the NSW ones but not the VIC ones for some reason.

Also, have managed to get some Hema maps to work (some specific area maps), but not others (other specific area maps, and none of the state maps work).

It claims to understand the ozf2 format (oziexplorer), which all the above are.

However, it doesn't understand the ozfx3 format, which is a shame because I have 1:250K ozfx3 maps for all of Oz.

Re: iPhone Apps for travelling - what do you have?

                  Guys,

I saw the other day that HEMA are releasing an iPad app for their maps. Although I can't see their $800+ device market being eroded by a software product, so I'd suggest it'll be pricey.

Having said that, the concept of an iPad and all its physical/screen/power/size benefits makes sense for a car environment as a platform for lots of things. Despite all of Apples applications, there are still significant constraints to the OS.

Unfortunately people have been doing GIS and mapping on Windows for a lot longer, theres heaps of software and map tiles out there.. shame the tablet PC's just aren't up to scratch. Has the iPad got a USB socket? It'd be nice to run more than 16GB of music off it. That'd make a great in travelling incar option.

Stuck on this one.. maybe worth waiting..

                  Thoughts??

Re: iPhone Apps for travelling - what do you have?

I have 64GB iPad... Music storage is not a problem...

Numerous mounting issues, but the best I have seen is a length of shock cord running between the A/c vents and if you have the Apple flip-case you just fold it over the shock cord for a pretty neat DIY mount in front of the centre console. I haven't tried it yet.

Purely the best hardware for a really good mapping solution, currently just let down by software, unless you want to pay mega bucks for those apps that sell otherwise freely (or cheaply) available maps.

Oziexplorer are working on an app but they're doing Android first..

VMS charging $200 and you only get the useless 250K Topos.

Mud maps charging several hundreds of $ to get the higher res Topos.

Bit Map seems to me to be the only cost-effective solution to the 4wder, but we might all need to work together to get our Aussie Topos in a compatible format. I'm sure it can be done.

Re: iPhone Apps for travelling - what do you have?

Longdog, i have BitMap and I 'uploaded' one of my many ozi explorer maps allbeit in ozf2 format. the tracking was out by a fraction, but enough for me to stop using it. the ozi files are all in ozf3 format so exporting them to an earlier format is also a real pain.

Instead, I now use the app 'MudMap' and download any maps i need - the Fraser Island map cost me $6 i think and is VERY accurate. I will in future download these maps for a few bucks each on an as-needs basis.

BTW it works great and I was very happy using it on Fraser...

Re: iPhone Apps for travelling - what do you have?

Good to hear. Mud map probably is cost effective for destinations like Fraser but for long distance outback touring the map cost would be much higher. Interesting that the Bit Map app was not accurate. Thanks for your input.

This is an interesting concept. I paid around $400 for an SD card with the Navionics maps for the GPS/sounder on my boat. That is a marine map providing underwater contours, beacons and markers for marine navigation around Austraila.

When I opened the box, there was a flyer saying "Download Navionics for iPhone". I downloaded it at a cost of $15.

I now have on my iPhone (and iPad) for $15 - EXACTLY what I paid $400 for on the boat GPS. In fact it's better as the iPhone and iPad have higher resolution screens than my $1500 Boat GPS/sounder.

I was really pissed off about that, but eventually reconciled that it is nice to have a backup navigation device. But still, it's interesting that they have seriously revalued their data for the mobile market.

Obviously their marketing strategy for mobile devices differs from their strategy for fixed devices. Hopefully HEMA will follow suit. After all, isn't it better to sell 100,000 apps at $10 profit than 1000 devices at $300 profit? If HEMA released a $15 iPhone/iPad app tomorrow I'm sure it would sell well, as there is little competition at the moment.

Re: iPhone Apps for travelling - what do you have?

                            Longdog,

Fascinating response! If HEMA were to do it smartly, they would switch the software users to a subscription model (like the SPOT navigator etc). Offer a core service and additional purchase (like your $15 purchases) as incrementals. If I invested $800-900 on a HEMA device right now, I'd be inclined to spend no more money with them for a long time to feel like I got maximum value.

I think HEMA will soon be confused about what type of company they are, hardware (they dont seem to update much .. arguably is it a good hardware platform?), software GIS mapping + streetnav, and lastly the maps + intellectual property associated with them (special information). From a strategy perspective I'd be inclined to drop the hardware and make your software available on all platforms.

Lastly is there a large enough consumer market for DIY software implementations - grey nomads and ipads? Maybe some...

Find-A-Park isn't bad. It's handy to have there if you're looking for somewhere last minute, but of course (like all Apps) not much chop if you don't have any phone service....
