  • Turboing a 90s Prado

Hey fellas I know jack squat about engine components or turboing a 4wd
I'm feeling the base 3.4L engine of my Prado is struggling on some tougher tracks ect and I'm looking at spending a few bucks on a turbo kit and possibly a 3" exhaust system. Would someone with some better knowledge of this be able to point me in the right direction and show me a couple of kits that would do the Prado some justice.
Engine is a 5VZ-FE 3.4L petrol if that helps at all?
Looking for a turbo that doesn't cost an arm and a leg to buy, but will improve the performance, same with the exhaust system. Located in NSW.
    Cheers.

not really an ideal engine to turbo , unless your stripping it down to change pistons, rod bolts, bearings & head gaskets
then there is the computer to either have changed or reworked ( not sure if they have hacked into the early ones ?) complete exhaust & manifold set up , then mount an intercooler and it's plumbing

there is no kit a such that i know of

for what you will end up spending you might want to look at a later model Prado

there have been some resonably cheap 4L 120 series as well as 3L KZ 120's aswell or the 3L version of your car, they were pretty good as well (TX model)

While a turbo can give a lot more power by there design they tend to produce more power as revs increase (more exhaust flow) so for low speed work are not always the best solution.
A supercharger being belt driven provides boost from idle which is excellent for low speed off road work. I have been running a TRD supercharger on my Prado for several years without any issues.
The TRD kit is designed for the 3.4L engine and installation is only a couple of hours as there is no need to custom exhaust, intakes etc. A piggy back ECU is recommended to ensure reliable operation. My Prado produces 130 kw at the wheels and is very easy to drive off road with increased torque from idle.
i have just bought a new Prado and I miss the performance of the old 90 but my other half enjoys the extra features and comfort of the new VX
