  • Installing Blackvue via fusebox advice

    Hi everyone

So I've bought a Blackvue dash cam (single channel) and it's coming with the power magic pro, which connects the camera to the fusebox rather than connecting the camera to the cigarette lighter port. It also does some nice stuff in parking mode to prevent the battery draining too low. Anyway, I just checked the fuse box at the driver side; it was a lot smaller than i was expecting (I don't have a lot of experience with this stuff though so I'm going back 25 years to my first vauxhall car in england). I'm planning on using wire fuse taps to connect to the fuse box and wondered if anyone could answer the following:

    1) What type of fuses are used in the 2014 Prado? Given the size of the box I'm inclined to think they're the "mini" variety but would appreciate someone in the know confirming.
    2) Wrt wire taps, I was assuming SCA or Repro would sell them but I don't see anything in the search results. Actually that's not quite true, SCA sell online only, but it'd only consider buying from there if I could get from the store. Does anyone know a good reliable place to buy the fuse taps? Preferably inshore but I'm happy to buy online if the store is reputable.
    3) Finally, what is the general approach to determining which fuse is ignition triggered and which is constant power supply? Do I just need to check the fuse box lid and take a guess as to which fuse is likely to be on constantly or not? If anyone can look at the attached photo and suggest which fuse to use for constant power, and which for switched power, I'd greatly appreciate it.

    Cheers

Fuse box lid for wich wires you want

I never used a fuse tap I should of but I just wrapped the wire around the fuse and pushed it back in seemed to work been in car 6+ months now and been off road and bumpy tracks and no issues

it is a #### to do though

I can’t recalk wich ones I used either

but you can’t put the lid back on after either

Yeah it was immediately obvious the lid wasn't going back on but I don't think that's much of a big deal. I just need to determine which fuse - including what amperage I should be aiming for - to use for this dash cam. I feel like this is the hardest bit. Everything afterwards is hiding wires and sticking things to the windscreen. Bit concerned about the windscreen pillar airbag so will probably have to lead the wire over the top of that and down the door seal, which isn't ideal but not the end of the world.

Btw for anyone else going this route, this website details what each of the fuses are doing (the fuse lid isn't the most descriptive in this regard): https://fuse-box.info/toyota/toyota-...010-2018-fuses

I was a little worried about the airbag too
but when you up where the read view mirror is and tuck it up between the windscreen and the roof linnning.. goes in nicely ! Follow it to the a pilar and you should be able to get it easy just use something to push it in I used a flat head

theres enough play in the plastic a pillar to get it in easy.. then follow down etc

really easy I have BlackVue 650 front and rear

Gurilla did you take in to account at all the fuse rating when wiring up? I’d have thought we should be picking the lowest amperage possible as the magic pro is only rated to 2A maximum, but I get the feeling we can pick whichever fuse we want (I’m not an electrician so my knowledge is poor)

I can’t remember what I looked up but it just told to Tap in to these certain fuses

if I get time tonight I’ll have a quick look think there only 10-15a fuses ?,

                Check out this http://knigaproavto.ru/shemy/en/toyo...x-diagram.html

                pretty sure I used (2) accessories 7.5a

                and (36) ignition 10a

mines been fine so far ? Think if you wanted you could put a fuse in between the fuse for the and magic pro ?? They usually run off a cig point anyways if you don’t use a magic pro and they are rated to 15a??

Hmm interesting. If you used port 2 that would suggest to me that it's a switched fuse, only active when ignition is on. Which means you've used port 36 for the constant live source. Yet, wouldn't you think ignition by its nature would also be switched? Perhaps that's just semantics and my lack of understanding though. Man this shouldn't be so complicated.

You've also wired up to the fuse directly whereas I'm going to use a tap, which means I have the extra complication of trying to work out what fuse to use for the PMP (effectively this will be as you suggest at the end there, a fuse in-between the car circuit and the PMP). I really think I need to be using something like a 3A fuse for this new circuit I'm creating with the taps, since that's close to the max usage of the PMP (fuse taps accept two fuses, the original you're replacing in the fuse box and a second fuse for the new circuit being created).

Did you worry at all about which pin of the fuse to use when wiring up? Does it matter?

Appreciate your input here by the way!

I want to put a fuse tap in one day though

no I was reading and it doesn’t matter what side of the fuse you use as power will go through no matter what ?? Or something

I’m not a spammer. I posted the video as there is a right way And a wrong way to use a tab.

                            Interesting video
me_two thanks, although it does raise again the question I had about making sure the wire tap goes in to the fuse box in a certain orientation (to ensure the "load side" is correctly connected). As I don't have a multimeter or circuit tester I'm gonna have to figure out some other way to check which side of the fuse box is live. yeesh.
[edit] stuff it i've bought a cheap circuit tester, may as well do it properly

FK me I just tried the camera for the first time via the cigarette lighter port and I think the damn thing is f**ked. All I get is a constant gps light and front security light. Can't get wifi to start, pressing and holding the button doesn't start the format process... just those two lights and nothing else.

                              sigh.
[edit] called Oz distributor, sounds like camera is dead on arrival and needs exchanging. Awesome start!
