  • Car covers/hail protection for a loaded 4wd

Those of you with roof racks etc, who have to park your car in the street, how do you protect it from hail? What with some of the wild weather at the moment, I'm curious what others do.

I have a rooftop tent and a lift, so I can't take my car to most car parks during a storm. Covers don't readily exist that will fit over all that stuff. I was thinking maybe tying a tarp from the roofrack to the bullbar and similar for the rear, but I'm sceptical if that will actually work.

You can buy hail blankets so maybe an option is to get a custom made one. If possible park on the lee side of a building or other structure may help. That said most hail storms are not that bad and I have found the platform rack protects the roof pretty well and I have thrown a camping mattress over the bonnet to keep swmbo happy in the past.

But then if you get a serious hail storm like we had in Brisbane southside a few years back nothing will make much difference, that hail storm was folding the A pillars in on cars as well as smashing screens etc. It actually destroyed my corrugated iron roof.

We looked through a car dealership a week after that storm at Marooka while a salesman there was trying to trap us into a buying a car we didn’t want.... We were just looking. Every car in their yard was wrecked.
