  • Whirring noise

    G'day team,
First post! I have a 2002 Advantage (3.0L TD) and has a terrible noise that sounds like tyre scaling. It is coming from the front end and began with a high pitch scratch at 75-80km/h. This then changed to a whirring noise similar to poor tyres. I've sent it to numerous places and no one knows what it is. Here is a list of what has been replaced or ISN'T the source:

    Tyres
    Brakes
    Suspension
    Fan belt
    Pinion bearing
    Front wheel bearings
    Tyre alignment

Acceleration, braking and turning does not change the noise. It occurs worst between 65-80km/h now but is noticable at slower speeds. Next step is to change the diff oil which is overdue.

Any idea from you knowledge champions would be appreciated! We have owned this beast since new and has 423,000kms on it. Hasnt missed a beat!

    Gus

Hey mate, did you get to the bottom of this in the end? My 95 series is having a similar issue. Whining (kinda metal on metal) noise when turning right only.

I have replaced all 4 brake rotors + new brake pads all round. Have newish suspension and very recent wheel alignment. Bearings (wheel movement) checked by the mechanic and all good. Tyres are in excellent condition. Power Steering fluid levels are good. I did have a power steering leak a few months back but that seems to have resolved itself somehow? Maybe the mechanic tightened something up when he was under there but it's not losing fluid and reservior is full. No other noises from the pump other than when turning right only. Strange!

Mate the wheel bearings have to be totally stuffed before you’ll detect any movement.
They last very well but when they go, they can show symptoms as you have.
Trouble is you have to destroy the bearing in order to check it. They don’t cost a fortune but you need some heavy duty gear to remove one from the hub.
Check if it gets hot after a drive, a bit hard to feel in there but if a bearing is stuffed, the hub will get really hot.
      Try left side first.
