  • Sat Nav disabled after winch installed

Had a Bushranger winch fitted on my new Prado 150 by an ARB dealer last week - after collecting the car I noticed the Sat Nav has been disabled (the touch screen and the audio etc. all works fine).

I went back to the guy who fitted it and he said, nothing to do with him. The Toyota dealer said, nothing to do with them either. After a long discussion, the selling dealer has agreed to book the car in for a diagnostic check of the Sat Nav for $132 (the car is 3 months old!).

I went to a different Toyota dealer, who told me the winch installer had most likely 'fryed' the unit or the GPS. He could send the head unit to Pioneer, but it would take 3 months to come back, and I would be charged $2000 for the repair if the fault had been caused by an electrical problem.

Anyone know what the winch installer might have done?

Bottom line is it worked before going there.

I wouldn't be taking it anywhere else at this point, Contact ARB head office and explain your situation. Taking it elsewhere reduces your ability to claim against them.

Letting the winch installer off the hook will be your first downfall.

Perhaps you can mention it on ARB's social media. they tend to follow up on things like that rather quickly.

Well, I would be checking a couple of of simple things first particularly if the head unit is responding OK but can't receive satellites. If the 2021 version of the satnav is the same as my 2018 truck then start by removing the micro SD card and cleaning the contacts on the card, then reinstall it. Now I am not sure about the next step but I would want to know where the sat nav aerial is and checking it's connection to the head unit. It's is possible that the aerial is in the head unit but I doubt it. The aerial is likely to just a small disc object somewhere under the dash, see if a Toyota dealer can point you in the right direct. Good luck !

Thanks that's good advice. I called the ARB dealer again and he is now saying that it was working fine when he had finished with the car (he previously told me that he hadn't noticed that the screen was blank after the installation of the winch). So I'm thinking he's getting ready to deny any responsibility if a big fault is found.

Thanks. Taking the car back to Toyota on Monday for a check. Hopefully if it's something simple they can fix it there and then. I think the SD card is behind the screen unit, so I'll leave that to the dealer to remove in case I break anything by messing around with it.

Turns out the guy had unplugged a cable from the head unit and forgot to put it back in. Not sure why he needed to remove it in the first place though.

Hopefully the dealer charged ARB for it.

They just charged $66 for half an hour's labour, so I didn't think it was worth the hassle and stress of going back to the winch fitter.

Still don't see why he needed to go anywhere near the head unit to fit the winch electrics though.
