  • 12 V fridge in 2022 Prado

I have no experience with 12 V fridges and are thinking about getting one of the small Dometic CFF20 fridges.

    https://www.dometic.com/en-au/outdoo...-cff-20-258894

Can anybody see any issues running one of these in my 2022 Prado via the 12V outlet in the car (only while the engine is running)
I don’t have a second battery and don’t want one.

    Thanks for any help.

    Cheers
    Graeme

    Hi
I bought this 6 months ago. I know its not a Dometic but it was only $199. worked a treat inside the car. I had it running in the garage past 4 months as a freezer. also bought a 40AH portable battery from BCF, it runs the fridge for 44hrs from full charge to flat. uses only 30% of the 40AH battery, for 24 hrs running.
A much more afford able option.
But if you want quality, buy dometic

These types of fridge/freezers usually have a voltage cutout selector on the plug panel.
You can set the cut out for the fridge to cut when battery voltage drops to around 11v. That way the start battery will still have enough grunt to start the car.
I don’t know if that 12v outlet has constant power, might be only via ACC.
I ran an Anderson plug to the left rear panel for our fridge.

Hi mate. You’ll have no issues running one on the standard plugs while the car is running.
The factory plugs loose power once the car is turned off.
Obviously it’s not a great long term solution if you use it regularly for camping etc, but I use it for my 50L weaco for a quick weekend trip when I’m driving for a good part of the day. (my van has the spare batteries so I don’t have one in the car)

Sorry carco, but that advise is not great. Anything below 11.9 volts is starting to damage a battery and you will struggle to start the car any lower than about 12.2 volts. On most fridges the highest voltage setting to cut off is 11.5v which is way too low (unless you have a poor setup and lots of voltage drop).
Most factory power outlets will struggle to run a fridge with the motor off and in acc mode as the cable size is not large enough to cope with the voltage drop. It will work, just not real well.
You could run a fridge for a few hours with the motor off, but most times people forget it’s on and ruin their battery.
So in answer to your question, it works fine but only if you are running the car for at least a few hours every day and not opening the fridge much overnight.
