  • Cheapest way to mount a Kings Kwiky (75kg) rooftop tent to 120-series Prado?

I recently bought a secondhand Prado that came with factory roof rails and Rhino Rack Vortex bars. I had no idea how much this would limit me in terms of what I can put on the roof.

I want to put the 73kg Kings Kwiky rooftop tent on it and probably do some offroading in it (Gibb River Road, Fraser Island, beaches, etc).

So it seems like I've got 80kg weight limit on the rails, 75kg with the Vortex Rails, and the tent all by itself is already 73kg (no awning, no bedding, nothing). The distance between the Vortex bars is also only 95cm, and the Kwiky tent itself is already 212cm long... so the mounting points are not that spread out considering the length of the tent.

Looking at flat platforms that bolt right into the roof of the Prado gets me 100kg while offroad, but they're all $2,000+ which is really expensive and I don't want to spend that much. At most I just want to pay for some steel cross bars that bolt right to the roof.

I'm only in Australia for 3 months on a tourist visa.

Any options to make this work that won't break the bank?

I’d try getting a set of the rhino backbone roof mounting kit only. From there, galv uni strut and some bolts through the uni strut and backbone.
You’ll need a drill and basic hand skills.
that would give you three cross members to bolt the tent to.
Any store that stocks rhino could order the parts separately.
Otherwise look into a kings tent rack. Pretty cheap if all you want is short term.
