  • Brisbane to Charleville

I am thinking of getting out of Brisbane and taking the family to the Cosmos Centre at Charleville in the School holidays - not a big trip but something to get use out of the camper trailer and perhaps a final trip for the Prado before I upgrade

Would be interested in people's views on what to see and where to stay en-route. Existing thoughts are basically to a straight out and back trip but that is pretty boring so any suggestions for a more circular trip would be good.

    All the best :P

Wish list - ARB steel bull bar, 2 inch lift, dual battery system, snorkel, milford cargo barrier, black widow rear draw system and rear lockers as well as new bash plates for the ones I have trashed. Oh and yes a 150!!!

    Re: Brisbane to Charleville

I was there this time last year and we did the loop Charleville - Adavale - Quilpie - Charleville. Road to Adavale and Quilpie was good quality dirt and depending on road conditions try to go Adavale to Quilpie west of the river. The east road is very similar to the road from Chaleville to Adavale. Road from Quilpie to Charleville is sealed. When we were there the river was up but the crossings are on formed roads and passable in a fair depth of water.
The wildlife, scenery and sheer remoteness of the area is the beauty of the palce. Adavale is an eye opener and Quilpie has great food and coffee at the cafe and opals if you are that way inclined.
For road conditions I checked with the local police and then the RACQ depot. They have good contacts out there and were most helpful.
Enjoy the trip. We did it in a day but it was a long one.

      Hey Martin

I agree with Callo... thats a great little loop and Adavale is a hoot! (make sure you see the house where the bloke lived who threw his stubbies out the window) Also if possible.. time the Cosmos visit to the night of a full moon... we were lucky when we were there as you can do the stars AND the moon thru the telescopes... a very enjoyable night...but rug up!

        Hi Spender

Have you considered coming back via Cunnamulla and St George, there is some interesting places, Eulo Date Winery, the owner is a wealth of information and a character to boot, they also have healing mud baths that really work, nice bush camping on the billabongs 5 mins west of town. The little town of Bollon has a nice pub and good camping on the riverbank.

St George has some fishing and the caravan park near the bridge is nice and friendly, the famous Nindigully Hotel has camping on the riverbank, Coolimunda Dam is a nice spot to camp, just don't camp too close to the train line.

Gordon Country just north of Warick is great camping and only two hours from home. For a nice relaxed trip home you would be looking at 4 - 5 days.

        Regards, Richo.
