Where is the best place to keep it? I bought a fire extinguisher today to carry in the car. If you need to use it; it will probably be in an emergency situation so you don't want it where it is hard to get hold of so where is the best place for it? It is the standard red 1kg ABE Powder one with a metal bracket to attach it somewhere. It is about 36cm long and needs about 9cm of width to fit it is. Any ideas??

Since the site search isn't current working on threads that have been imported from the old forum and have not had a post I found you can still search using google. Use the following link and just append your search requirements to the search box but make sure the site reference is still there:

Anyway, spent a few hours putting together a fire extinghuser mount as I was sick of this floating around in the back and taking up valuable space. I choose the rear driver footwell as has been used by others. Used some 2x20mm bar, some 5mm nuts and bolts and some pretty black spray. Happy with the result and the kids don't get caught up on it:

The uprights are about 150mm long at the rear end and 140 at the front end (closer to the mount). Then a cross piece with the actual extighuser bracket attached.Nick

I'm not convinced the 1kg ones are quite big enough? we have a larger one that clamps to the inner side of the cargo barrier. Most people prefer them closer to the driver, but in 99.9% of cases I'll be pulling up if there's a fire on board or someone else needs help. Reckon if I'm trapped inside a burning wreck it's probably all over anyway.

I use the bracket that comes with them....much the same as above.

Just put a steel plate behind the mesh and bolt through the lot. It probably wouldn't hurt to have some sort of safety chain /cage over it in case of major accident, but we don't bother as it generally has all manner of soft things in front of it. I'd imagine even a floor mounted one could become a hazard in this situation as well.Last edited by Allfour4x4; 29-04-2011, 06:22 PM.

I had considered mounting to the cargo barrier but two things turned me off that idea.
1. If it was in the rear cabin area then this would be impossible or difficult to access on big trips as the rear area is usually packed to the roof
2. I was concerned about having this forward facing into the passanger area in case the extinguisher was not held in place sufficently and came loose from the housing bracket.
The two possible locations that I truley considered was mounting into the foot well by the drivers feet but the concern there was that with the seat back (as I have mine) then the location of the extingisher was too pronounced and when I use cruise control then it would be in the same location as my foot. Located at the footwell also resticted access to under the drivers seat (my toolbox) as well plus it didn't seem possible to allow for the extingisher to be afixed to the seat to allow it to move with the seat as required. The last location was the middle seat side foot setp as I used. For me this is easy to access and is basically an unused void. My youngest daughter is probably the only one in our family to use this step as she is only 5. The other two just step on in without a drama so the loss of the step made minimal impact on them plsu the fact that it does not interfere with their access, it seemed the logical location for my vehicle and family.Nick

Hi All
Contributing to this thread with my chosen location for a 1kg extinguisher.
Utilising third row cup holder and trimmed bracket on drivers side.
Easily accessed from behind second row seat, from doorway (no cargo barrier fitted).
Could mirror on the left hand side also.
