  • Careful of the scammers when selling your car!!

Not sure if it's been brought up before, but just wanted to let you fellas know to whatch out for the scammer SMS messages that I seem to be getting.
Allways worded a similar way. And asks you to contact them via Gmail.
So if you get a text when selling your car with +44 area code (UK I believe). Just hit delete and dont reply via SMS or Email.

Re: Careful of the scammers when selling your car!!

i have heard of this and others.

6-12mths ago we saw a 120 series prado for sale online. real good price and description.
contacted seller via link (email) on the add.
location was set to sydney. asked if we could get address to inspect and then was told vehicle was then in Darwin,
ready for shipping to buyer once payment was made (i don't think so).
we replied with no worries, but wanted to inspected vehicle and will pay onsite (the old bluff to see if it existed).
we live just north of sydney and had no intention of going to Darwin, and the whole time it rang alarm bells.
seller replied with it is in a shipping yard and no access is possible.
contacted the web site to alert them and later received a response back from them thanking us and this users account
had been ended and the matter forwarded on to the police. good result i think

there are people out there doing this, and you just need to be on your guard,
and walk away and report it, if things seem to good to be true. it not worth getting ripped off.

yeah. there are a few out there. ive contacted a few that were scammers. then got the warning emails from carsales.
seems that by sending text messages they are trying to stay under the radar of police or the selling site. from what ive discovered they can send of numerous text messages to sellers, asking you to email them. that way they never deal with carsales in any way.

Re: Careful of the scammers when selling your car!!

o does anyone have a suggestion of where is the best place to sell your prado ?. I've had a 2005 VX advertised on carsales for a few weeks at what I thought would have been a fair price compared to the others on there but haven't received one query.

Re: Careful of the scammers when selling your car!!

Also, if you are selling your car online (carsales, drive.com.au etc) be aware of a scam where someone emails you saying (paraphrasing "I work offshore / do not have much time to contact people. I am very interested in your car. I wish to pay via paypal. I have an agent that can come and get the car once I pay. I want it very fast. Give me your paypal details and I will pay right now").

These are not genuine people wanting to buy your car, as I've had three messages from different email addresses with a similar story. They WILL NOT pay via any other way (i.e. i explained to them that it would take 4 business days for me to set up a paypal account, but they could transfer the money to me via e-banking over 1 business day so they can get the car earlier (which seems to be what they want) and they would have none of it).

A mate of mine had the exact same thing happen, where the scammer even offers to forward too much money so that my mate could have paid for the freighting on the scammers behalf. Funnily enough when my mate say no to paypal, and bank cheque only, the scammer stopped making contact!

Good to be aware of, because I had never heard of this type of scam until then....

              Cheers,

Check your weekly statictics email from carsales - this will tell you whether the car is too highly priced, or whether there are just too many better bargains at present...

Re: Careful of the scammers when selling your car!!

Good pickup. That supossed 'Grande' has a few things that are a bit odd:
                    1. The white is a bit flat and not the pearl white finish
                    2. The privacy glass is not as dark as it seems (when did the GXL come with privacy glass?)
                    3. There is a missing Grande or GXL badge on the rear door
                    4. The low range gear knob is not from the grande
                    5. Missing centre diff lock button
                    6. Missing rear suspension height adjustment controls
                    7. Missing TEMS controls
                    8. Rotary dials for the air-cond controls instead of the digital climate control jobbies
                    9. Text says 5 speed auto but instrument cluster suggest only 4 speed
                    10. No sunroof

Who in their right mind would sell a car using paypal anyway? The fees are just ridiculous, especially for an entity that isn't a bank - but another middleman you have to pay to "protect" your bank details. The next thing you'll see is another entity set up to "protect" your paypal account  . Anyway good on ya for picking out the scammer.

These scum are everywhere, I've noticed an increase in the amount of scams in the snailmail box too.
