Has anyone tried the new Rhino Pioneer roof rack system? Hasn't even made their website yet but I just had a good look at the Melbourne 4 X 4 show. More solid, cheaper, lighter, more aerodynamic and lower profile than the old system. I am considering getting one with an extra set of HD aero bars to put on for around town when I have the rack off. It will still work out cheaper than the old set up and gives me more options and looks easier to change/remove. Would appreciate hearing anyone's experience with it.

Looks good. Finally, they have used a similar channel system as Rola where eyebolts can be slid anywhere along the plank for fixing. There's a fair bit of rivetting involved and there is no longer a need for HD crossbars. So the platform sits lower. Great for lifted vehicles who can't get into carparks of have a low garage door.
See model 42102 for the Prado. Weighs 25kg.
The problem is that the Rhinorack leg kits are sold separately. These can be nearly $300 a set.

Re: New Rhino Pioneer roof rack
The link added by amts is part of the new range, but there is also a welded square tube style that looks great. Can't find any images of it on the web but I picked up the Oct 2010 brochure and will scan it and post shortly. I thought someone must have got to play with one before they introduced it to the market. You are not the first person to think that everything has been thought before.

Re: New Rhino Pioneer roof rack
I prefer the look of the optional rails over the welded square tube. But the rails are fairly expensive.
BTW, a picture of your scanned image appears in the fitting instruction PDF for the Pioneer rack. Apparently it has an ATP2013 part number but I can't see any further info on it.
Looks like Rhino has discontinued the alloy platform rack and replaced it with the Pioneer rack.

Re: New Rhino Pioneer roof rack
Any idea about pricing? I was always thinking I'd go with the windcheetah but this is comparable. The Windcheetah is a bit costly so I'm interested to see what deal they can do on this. Quite like those rails.Cheers - Phil Taylor

Re: New Rhino Pioneer roof rack
Prices are on Rhino's website. eg. The Pioneer rack that fits the 120 and 150 are $694. This price does not include the leg kit.
Actually, the Pioneer racks are made to fit specific vehicles only. It's not like you can buy a smaller one if you wanted to. However, I may be wrong here.

Re: New Rhino Pioneer roof rack
You must have got a good deal on the old platform. I recently got a quote of about $1200 for HD bars and the old style tray, and I got a qote for the new pioneer rack at the 4x4 show of about $900.Originally posted by Silvoyou are looking at about $1k to get it to fit onto a prado roof. the rack and the legs.
the old platform rack was half the price. You are not the first person to think that everything has been thought before.

Re: New Rhino Pioneer roof rack
Actually, the above sum comes up to $1015. But you can get the 3 bar HD set (which is the feet + crossbars) from Toyota for ~$300 so the total works out to be:Originally posted by SilvoPlatform = $428 + $75 Fitting kit + $299 feet + $213 cross bars = $716
ok, not quite half the price, but cheaper.
$428 + $75 + $300 = $803
However, the old alloy platform does not have the channel in the planks to take eyebolts, etc. Because of this, I made my own custom platform. If the Pioneer rack was around then, I would have got it.

Re: New Rhino Pioneer roof rack
I don't believe the old alloy platform was a good seller. The only place I have seen it was on 1 PP member's rig. Haven't seen one on a Prado physically. So I doubt that any of the roof rack place would have any old stock as they the retailers would just order one in from Rhino HQ when a customer wants one.
Best bet is to get the Toyota 3 bar HD set and just use the legs to attach the Pioneer platform rack. Then if you don't need the platform, you can just put the 3 HD crossbars on. Best of both worlds.
