  • Follow up to lifted and Squeaking

Well I have ripped off wheels, taken off brake callipers, pulled the exhaust flange apart greased it up, laid on my back every night for a minimum of an hour for the last week checking, pushing, pulling, probing, taken off bash plates, greased tailshaft, checked shocks, springs, drive shafts, checked bullbar, snorkel, every possible thing trying to find this metal to metal squeak, is driving me insane and my wife having to put up with me, but cannot for the life of me find the squeak. What in the hell could it possibly be, as in previous post all I had done was snorkel fitted and OME suspension fitted 50ml although only got 42ml out of it which is fine but trying to find it. I have been over it top to bottom, rolling down hills with engine off and still doing it, I thought at first it was only with engine running but it does it with it turned off and in neutral (auto box) The only thing I did notice today was with engine running and genttle throttle in gear its worse. I was hanging off side steps rolling, my mate hanging out passengers door trying to listen to where it was coming from, front, back, middle. It will be on the market in 3 weeks (after my holiday if I dont find it) time its pissing me off that badly and the other problem is it comes and goes,Was doing it for over 3 hours this morning. Got home had lunch then had to go to Windsor to pick wife up didnt make a sound for virtually the whole trip (70 odd klm's) then did it when taking off from lights about 3 k from home then stopped again. It does it with motor running and not running but with vehicle rolling. Anybody is welcome to try and find it and will give them a couple of cartons or a bottle or two of Bourbon, Scotch what ever the hell you drink, if I had it hear I would have drank the lot by now !!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Steve, you poor bugger

Long shot but have a look at your bonnet adjusters. They are the rubber grommets on the fron appron that sit atop the bonnet adjuster bolts. Mine are warn in the GQ and squeek to high heaven (i like it though  ) and will get around to fitting new ones one day. Failing that, have another smoke.
Give me a buzz if this doesn't help and I'll come and have a look, never know, 4 eyes may be just what it takes.

    cheers mate

Follow up to lifted and Squeaking

I had a squeak after my lift and it was the sway bar rubbing against strut have a look at the sway bar and u will see it
If arb installed it take it back to them as I know they are aware if it, it does not happen very often

What we did to fix mine was to bend the sway bar a little and also has to shorten the sway bar mounts and no more squeak
      Regards
      David

Hi David, yeah mate checked all that, clear as, heaps of room around it, even sprayed some wd40 on the brakets for the hell of it and did no good. I have been over this vehicle more in the last two weeks then I ever have since I bought it, bloody unbelievable that getting a lift could cause such a pain in the arse................No use taking it to the store that did the lift as I can bet my balls on it that it wont squeak when I do even told him that, he did say to bring it back down so they could check it over....Regards Steve M

NO, I have jumped up and down on it, had my neighbour riding the bullbar the other night just trying to work out if its from the front or the back, I have shaked the shit out of it side to side rocking the body, jumping up and down on the towbar, jumping up and down on the bullbar, its only when its rolling, I was thinking some thing rotating but my other mate today said its like metal to metal sound some thing vibrating just while on a smooth road, said probably just from the tread on tyres is enough for it to vibrate what ever it is ??????? Mate Im out of ideas, totally....Regards S

Re: Follow up to lifted and Squeaking

Hi Max, yeah mate checked all that today AGAIN !!!, All new rubber bushes top and bottom, only one I cant check is the passengers side rear as its a mongrel but Im sure its not coming from there, I think its coming from the roughly the centre to rear of vehicle but could be totally wrong, maybe been a metal sound its travelling/echoing could be coming from the bloody front. It was only today that it was doing it enough while my mate was in the car, the amount of times I have rang him at home as Im on my way home telling him hey its making the noise so he stands out the front waiting for me to roll past and by then it had stopped making the bloody noise, 3 streets from my house grrrrrrrrrrrrrr Regards steve

Re: Follow up to lifted and Squeaking

                  Steve,

I had a similar situation only a couple of weeks ago, Was driving me insane too. A high pitched metal to metal squeak that would come and go. [u]Eventually /u] I found the RHF brake caliper anti rattle spring had popped off (the spring steel clip that sits on top of the pads after they are fitted)... It was still held on at the top but the lower section had jumped off and in certain situations would rub on the inside of the rim causing the noise.

Upon inspection I found the disc rotor full of mud and rocks and this is what had forced the spring off.

So after weeks of laying on my back, tightening everything and replacing several bushes I now have a rattle free front end!

Probably not the same noise but thought I'd share anyway.

                  Chriso

Hi Chriso, na not that mate, it was doing it prior to me fitting new pads last weekend and still the same. I have removed the rear callipers and pads and checked the low pad thingy that sticks out to warn you they are low but pads still have about 1/4 left on them and the warning thingy was not touching the discs either side......... Driving me nuts Regards Steve M

Re: Follow up to lifted and Squeaking

Could be universal joints. when you lift the car the uni's will now run at a different angle. you likely can't feel any wear in them and pumping grease into them through the grease nipple might not be getting into the squeaky spot. there are 4 uni joints and replacing them on a 'maybe' would work out expensive (especially if it doesn't fix it).

If your good with the tools you will have no problems in pulling the uni's apart, clean and regrease them and put them back in.

                      Mark.

Have you tried silicon spray on all rubbers and anything else that moves? If you try it, it will work its way into lots of little nooks and crannies. I also heard that the spot weld on the passenger side front (just in front of the passenger door) inside the front passenger guard has been found causing plenty of squeeks.

                        Here is the link:-http://pradopoint.com/viewtopic.phpf...460a46#p116137

                        Hope it helps.

Hi there, the link doesnt seem to be working have tried from home computer and work computer, maybe has been taken off since ?? Will check out the front door but Im quit sure now after the wife and I spent 1 1/2 hours driving around last night that its from the passengers rear which is where they had troubles fitting the shock and had to drill a hole through the floor cargo area directly above the top of the shock as they had no way of getting to the bolt which I have heard is very common on the 90 series. I have tried ringing the installers today waiting for call back to see wether they had to remove anything else to fit it, maybe started taking out fuel tank or some thing before they decided to ring me ?? I dont know. I dont think so as the bolts dont look like they have been touched....Regards Steve

just throwing some stuff out there (can't remember if I've posted on this topic before)
                              *handbrake shoes
                              *handbrake cables (the undercar ones)
*security of fuel tanks (especially the aux tank)
*fuel and brake lines going to the back (check for a gap between lines as they run along chassis rails)
*check the hole they made in the floor to do the top shock mount as I think there is a strengthening brace there somewhere
*check the rear top shock mount plates for security to the chassis (failed welds etc)
*brake load sensing valve spring and security
*wheel bearing (might seam silly but you never know)
                              *front ball joints
*spring top insulators at the back and front
                              *is the exhaust touching anything
*the shocks themselves (consider changing back for a short run around the block)
*remove the bottom (rear) shock mounts and give them a lube
