  • CAR TV / Digital TV Antennas

For those members who have a TV capable stereo head unit in their trucks, has anyone tried the more permanent mount style of TV antenna and has a positive result with good reception?
I am looking to buy a small digital TV antenna that can be mounted discretely and permanently, just want to know if anyone has found a good one?
    Rich.

Will be interested in this as well.
I use the standard little one that comes usb tv sticks. It works heaps better if its horizontal and not vertical.

Re: CAR TV / Digital TV Antennas

Whilst not mobile exactly, what I'm currently using could be extended to mobile use.....

I have one of those USB TV stick things attached to my computer & I have as an aerial a omnidirectional (all directions) 12V adjustable gain caravan antennae.

      Similar to the picture above....
BTW way the web site of the picture is here...it lists a similar item but much dearer than mine was...($15 on super special @ Bunnings). These usually are around $80-$100 http://www.rcacc.com.au/product_info.ph ... ts_id=4412

The aerial is mounted ontop of our TV aerial hockeystick so its perhaps 15 feet above the ground. We are 35km's from the transmitter & we don't have line-of-sight to it as there is a small hill 10km away that just puts us into a transmission shadow.

Even so, I can receive the HD & SD channels without difficulty.

As a comparison the aerial that came with the USB stick was only able to get a signal if held in the right spot near the window......

If I seriously need TV in my car I would stick one of these on a pole so that during driving it would be lowered & the antennae still horizontal, but whist camping it could raised vertically to assist in gaining a signal. Of course once camped, a big directional antennae would be the best

      Cheers

Re: CAR TV / Digital TV Antennas

        Hi all

I have a 7" in dash tv with a built in set top box.. The antenna that it come with was rubbish and didnt really work that well.. I got onto ebay and bought a new one and have been blown away with the difference it has made. The standard antennas are about 10-20db and i found them to be rubbish. I found a 96db Goto Ebay and search 96db antenna.. They are about $85AUD for a single antenna but you can get 2 and run them in pairs. I ended up dealing with the shop direct and got one delivered to Adelaide for 70AUD. It was classed as second hand because the box had been opened, but it was all still wrapped in plastic and i saved 20 odd bucks.
Not that it is legal to drive with the telly on, but if it were possible to do so, im sure you would be able to watch the news on your way home from work and not have it skip and cut out..

        Cheers

Re: CAR TV / Digital TV Antennas

The link above points to an antenna that has no booster at all.......

The 96db refers to.... Signal Decline: 96db (10mhz) in the specs.....whatever that actually means....

I can't see how this can get a better signal than a aerial boosted to around 20db over normal unboosted signal.....

In saying that however the feedback comments seem to disagree with me.... ops:

I would be impressed if it could out do my caravan antenna!

                  cheers

I appreciate your feedback Richard and take it on board. However my prado is not your caravan and i have one of these antennas.. it works 500% better than the antenna that came with my DTV in dash TV. My standard antenna claims to be 20db and it was rubbish.(usb antenna on laptop was better) the 96db antenna has made a significant difference in adelaide. If i was looking for something that i could mount on a van or more Permanent, yes there are probably better antennas out there, but considering the size and what i get out of it, i find this perfect for the roof of my prado as it sits almost the same height as my roof rails.

Re: CAR TV / Digital TV Antennas

The only thing about this antenna is that it is not really made for permanent mounting. I am looking for something with the same good signal properties that can be mounted inside the car, perhaps near the dash board, permanaently.
I can't leave it outside my cat permanently for other reasons.
I need the same thing in a different configuration, but unfortunately that is not available.

Tried this 96db antenna, didn't really work that well (unfortunately).

Has anyone had any luck with a car mountable digital TV antenna yet?
