  • What have you used your winch for?

    Hi everyone,

As far as I can see this topic has not been mentioned. But I am wondering what strange, unusual, or perhaps clever applications have you used your winch for?

I have a Terrain Tamer hand winch which proved invaluable today. My father asked me to bring my chainsaw and help him fell a tree in his backyard. This tree was terribly rotten inside and presented a significant danger to ourselves and dad's house if we simply tried to fell it with a chainsaw.

I used my nogin and rigged up my Terrain Tamer winch and we pulled this thing down beautifully from a nice safe distance...

Needless to say, my dad who only drives a Ford, was suitably impressed and "wants one of those winches!"

Anyway, just wondering if anyone else has used their winch for anything other than vehicle recoveries?

Sligtly off topic but I once used a (strong) rope tied to the front of a Hilux I had to remove a 4 cylinder engine from a Corolla. Looped the rope above the engine and through a steal patio beam then inched the luxy bacwards gently (low range) and lifted the engine out.

Technically not a whinch I know but would certainly do the same job.

Things you do when you are alone.....

The wife wanted a half wine barrel full of dirt and a tree moved. There was no way you could budge it with human power. So I threw the tree trunk protector around it and winched it into its new position in the garden 8)

Re: What have you used your winch for?

I installed a new concrete septic pit a couple of years ago. Took a bit of thinking and a couple of snatch blocks to manouver it into position.

I have also positioned 2 big water tanks into the exact location, pulling and twisting them. They were not overly heavy (about 600kg) they are just arkward to man handle.

            Cheers

I had to remove a security fence which was a cyclone fence with barbed wire top. The posts were concreted under ashphalt! I hooked up the LR110 winch and gave it all she had ... skull dragged the 110 to the post. Ended up "removing" the posts with an angle grinder, cutting them off at ground level

i too have used my handwinch only for backyard operations. ( never used in recovery ). I quickly found that the winch is only as good as the anchor point. ops: Used for straghtening the back fence, pulling out stumps. I hear that can also be effective as a tensioner for fencing.

I went past a travelling circus, noted about 20 Tirfors being used as tensioners on their guy ropes for the big top !

Many hours spent pulling the lift pump shafts on windmills, using the winch was a lot easier than tying a wire rope around the tojo bullbar and reversing, some shafts had 4 or 5 sections.

Damonat had to recover a bogged honda civic out in barrington tops, after we told them not to go down that track, they proceded with a flat rear tyre (17inch rims) and a space saving spare on the other rear. fkn retards!

Re: What have you used your winch for?

I regularly use my winch to get my camper trailer down our drive without mishap. We live on a block with a fairly steep driveway. The gap between the gate is only about 2 inches wider than the CT on each side. Also, the drive way curves around a bit.
I got a remote control for the winch, and use it to let the winch out a bit at a time, and guide the CT by hand. Haven't bashed the gate since. Similar for bringing the CT up the drive.

Pulling 100 year old logs out of abandoned mine shafts to use on the camp fire.

They are generally rock hard and termite free and burn for hours. The tricky part is doing it safely without falling down the hole!

Came in very handy to be only car with a winch on recent central Oz trip.
Had to pull out both of the Patrols (with campers) that were also on the trip...was very wet through the Simpson and around Mt Dare in August.
