  • Mud flaps and rear door lock

My son and I have just returned from a 9 day 6000km trip from Melb to Yulara, Kings Canyon, Meerenie Loop Road, Palm Valley, down to Marla, to Oodnadatta, to Lake Eyre (Halligan Bay) east of William Creek, and the Borefield Road to Roxby Downs before returning on Sunday 3 Oct. It was a bit rushed but a great trip

Our 2008 D4D went well (as expected ) but there are a few issues I'd appreciate some comments from others:
    1. The rear door catch/locking mechanism failed on the Oodnadatta track and the door could no longer be secured. I had to hold it closed with a rope tied from the roof rack to the tow bar. The reaction from the Toyota Dealer yesterday was typical, "never seen that before ". Has anyone else seen this ?
    2. All 4 of the mudflaps have partly broken and they are now hanging more and more toward the horizontal than the vertical. This started soon after the car was new when we picked up some snow and mud. The Toyota Dealer is seeking advice from Toyota but again has anyone else seen this ?
    3. I reckon that the Prado generally is a dirty car internally and if dust can get in it will. After even driving around town for a few weeks the dashboard etc gets very dusty. I have had two GU Patrols including a 4.5 litre petrol which I drove 25000km around Australia and both were a lot better re dust. Any comments ?
    4. The car has just clicked over 76000km and the Cooper ATRs are about to be replaced with a set of BF Goodrich All Terrains ( which I had on my Patrols ).

I was a Patrol man down to the core but I am generally very pleased with the Prado

    thanks

Re: Mud flaps and rear door lock

Sounds like a great trip. To answer your questions/comments:
    1. No still ok. Has the latch moved and can be realigned? Could be caused by lots of corrugations on the dirt roads. Hopefully nothing is bent.
    2. The mudflaps are pretty flimsy and easily damaged. Unfortunately also expensive to replace. Haven't seen a viable replacement though because of the shape of the flares and fitting.
    3. Our dash gets dusty very quickly. And I run on recirc' most of the time. The 90 was the same. I don't seem to have much if any dust ingress at the back though others have mentioned this.
    4. I have pretty much the same ks but ditched my ATRs earlier and now have 20+k on the BFG A/Ts (275 65 17). The Coopers were showing signs of cracking around the sidewall but still had plenty of meat left. The BFGs have been all round a better tyre in my opinion. Having said that it is not fair to compare an LT tyre to a passenger construction tyre on a 4wd though.

Re: Mud flaps and rear door lock

I agree sounds like a great trip but in answer
      1. My 07 GX had a lot of trouble with dust in the latch/lock mechanism on the CSR/Gibb River run I just finished. Lots of WD40 seemed to overcome it for a while but then it would return, more wd40 fixes.
      2. My mudflaps were no trouble so I can't help there
      3. The dash what a pain I reckon I cleaned the dash twice a day for 8 weeks, recycle or fresh makes no difference when SWMBO smokes and has the window open
      4. I have the BFGs ATRs on board and they were great, there are a couple of damaged lugs but apart from that no issues. The pathfinder that came with us had Coopers on board, two flats and all four tyres lost lugs and damaged others. Stick to the BFGs

Re: Mud flaps and rear door lock

Never experienced the issue with door lock. I clean mine out reguarly though.

if you search there is a thread on dust ingress, a couple of grommets are reguarly left out when they fit towbars. this causes a massive ingress issue. I havent had bugger all dust in since I had mine checked.

          1. Never had this problem... and have done the Oodnadatta Track without fault.
          2. Not had this problem... I actually extended my rear mud flaps by screwing on extended ones for the Oodnadatta Track. The extensions got chopped up... but protected our trailer... so worked a treat.
          3. This is not our experience. Sure, you can get some dust ingress around the rear door, especially after a hard day's travel, but otherwise no problems.

            1. Not had this problem yet
            2. Just returned from trip to Broome and back (and all parts in between) and half back along Northern Highway the right hand extended rear mud flaps decided to break across the flex line of the standard mudflap and bash up the side of the rear bumper; checked left hand side and it too had started to break so removed extensions and the right hand side mudflap completely. Will have to price new mudflaps now
            3. Some dust ingress around the rear door, especially after a hard day's travel which then slowly covers all the lower parts with a fine dust layer, car was very dirty on both the inside and outside come return to home took a day to get clean

Re: Mud flaps and rear door lock

My rear door lock was a bit dodgy on CSR trip and Oodnadatta track etc. Had a similar problem in the old 80 ser. The trick in dusty conditions is NOT more lubricant but less. I find if i wipe around the locks with a rag at the end of each dusty day the problem doesn't arise. Clean and lubricate when you get home or hit the tar. My rear mud flaps are also cracking at the same place. Glue a bit of old car or bike tube over the crack on the front [tyre] side to save further damage and paying Toyota fortune for new ones. Dust sealing not great but if you look under back of car at LHS there is a simple flap there to let the dust and water in- great design Toyota! Neil

Re: Mud flaps and rear door lock

                Guys
*Thanks for your feedback. At this stage Toyota have said that they'll replace the door lock mechanism under warranty although the smart arse mechanic said "something has hit this".....sure. I am still waiting for their comments re the mud flaps but my approach was that all 4 have cracked and after all it is a 4WD and they should be designed to take a bit of a hammering. "Toyota tough".
*I will check the various plugs and grommets myself.
*The BFGs are being fitted in the morning. Interesting, but I had to hunt around to find a dealer with them. Most said they couldn't supply until Nov/Dec

Re: Mud flaps and rear door lock

With regard to the dust, if you haven't already done it, fitting a rear dust deflector (either the polycarbonate one or the other colour coded one) does help.

Just returned from our trip to central Australia. My rear door lock failed and wouldn't shut outside the Maree pub. Managed to get it shut with the help of roadside assist and a bloke from the pub. MattHannas also had the same issue, but his failed the week before mine. Cleaned out by Toyota and now working but they say it is not a warranty job. Other than that, the Prado performed brilliantly!

Couldn't get the rear door open after Marree-Coward Springs-William Creek-Coober Pedy run a couple of months ago. WD40 did the trick but on the advice of another traveller in the CP caravan park I switched to using a silicone spray which I bought in Alice Springs. Worked well for the rest of the trip to Darwin-through Qld-NSW- and home.
