Very interesting read and comments on non-factory fitted accessories. I know this is mainly about twin cabs, but the Prado 90 and 120 series do get a mention. Though I dont know how true the comments are.

Could you imagine the leverage forces on the back of that triton. The rear wheel carrier leverage alone would be severe. Then add in a longer tow hitch, a camper trailer and flex it over sand hills with nothing supporting the rear chassis(unlike a wagon) and then add in a pivot point (airbags). Well who would have thought the chassis would cry enough?

There is this weird notion in 4wd world that just because an aftermarket accessory can be bolted on that everything will be fine and the manufacturer will cover you. Of course they wont. They sell you a vehicle and they offer you factory approved accessories. If you choose to fit something else then the warranty is put at risk. Buyer beware.

I dont disagree, but the sad part is all of his options were fitted by his local 'missybitchy' dealer. He should have been told right from the start it would void his warranty. A minefield people should be aware of.

A good point Graeme. It would be interesting to know the flow of events. Was it a case, that often happens with our fleet, of ordering the vehicle and then telling (not asking) the dealer to fit X Y and Z from these suppliers and the dealer just dropping it off and then handing it over.

A good lesson I think in buying a vehicle designed for the job, not modifying one not designed for it. And the triton/hilux/navara etc are not designed for that sort of load.

I hope it goes well for the fella. That would be pretty heartbreaking though the fix shouldnt be huge $$ if he can rip the ute off himself and take it to a good fabrication shop.

        cheers
