Caravan Industry Problems

Couldn't find anything using search on this issue but it may be hidden in their somewhere.
Anyway, I have been doing some research on the forum for caravan information (weights, towing etc).
The background to this is that my wife & I decided some time ago we needed to do the Grey Nomad thing so we started to look at plans and ideas to go caravanning around Australia.
Unfortunately early last year after us being together for 40 years, she passed away.
For obvious reasons I shelved our original plans but recently I made a decision to re-visit them with the intention of travelling around Australia by myself.
Thanks to the excellent information on this forum a wealth of ideas have floated across my mind and I started to regain my interest and continue to do more research. One of the links led to The Caravaners Forum where I found this thread.

Given that my intention was to retire in the next 2 years and spend up to $60k on a decent van, I have to say this post has me thinking very strongly about implementing my plans. Those with caravans might not want to view the thread on the link but on the face of it it comes from a reliable source and over a long period of time. What do you think?
Paranoia on my part maybe or is the scale of these obvious problems exagerrated?

I'm not one for caravans, haven't owned one and as yet have not thought of purchasing one...
But thats some interesting reading, and damn, quite some damage too - most from simple things too... NASTY!

Gives the impression that its all makes and models on the market, although, I wouldn't have thought that it would be across the board!!!

Yup, been watching that thread grow, the electrical problems are a big worry :shock:

If you read through a lot of other posts there are some good van makers out there. You just need o do you homework.

Last i heard there was still no real regulation for the electrical systems contained within caravans and RV's, is this still correct? This of course would be a high contributing factor to such issues, as cost cutting can be a major concern when it comes to cable size selection. And one note i picked up in the linked thread above, is a reference to 'chinese made' 240V socket outlets... Nasty stuff... Another get what you pay for type situation?

I would like to see some of these caravans up close, be interesting from an electricians perspective to see just how it was put together, where it went wrong, and why!!!!

Personally I'm a camper trailer guy, but I recently watched a couple of DVD's of "The Gall Boys", some of you may have also. They own Kedron Caravans and it seems they have a well built rig for any condition.

Not sure what one of these costs, but from the DVD's, I'd say a fair bit as they have been to the Tip twice over the OTT, funny to watch...
