  • How life changes...

Fairly big news for me: I'm making a big move, taking my family to live in Singapore. I've been fortunate enough to walk straight out of my honours year at uni into a job as an application engineer in the asia pacific region (dream job).

The job is with Vision Research who are the primary manufacturers of high speed video cameras around the world. My position is to give pre and post sales support and training to clients and support for major events.

What this means in reality is that I could be on the ground at a rocket launch on standby in case one of the 25 cameras has a software or any other glitch and it's my job to fix it on the spot. I'll most likely be at the F1 for similar reasons. I'll also be working with universities in various situations where the operators may be physicists without photographic knowledge - it'll then be my job to advise on the right lighting to use and where to put it. So plenty of fun for me...

...but...it means I wont be 4WDing unless I take a trip or two up to Malaysia perhaps. Either way, I wont own a car (2nd hand Prado with 80,000Kms = ~Au$100,000) and I guess I wont have a huge lot of input here on PP anymore. I wont be disappearing, and I'm sure I'll be checking back in every time I'm sitting in some busy Chinese city getting really homesick for the bush!

So guys & gals - you're a great group at least some of you :P - best forum I've been on on the net by far. I've been fortunate to meet some of you on Ppoint days out and had some great times. Thanks for all your input, ideas, help and jokes...I'll try to drop in on chat every now & then still and I hope I'll still be around to get back on board when I get a Prado again one day!

So anyway, I hope all goes well here - keep getting out there and I'll be following your trips with great jealousy I'm sure.

Oh, BTW there's a great Prado (and cheap camper) which will be for sale soon too!

I have about a month before I go so I'll still be hanging around anyway.
Lastly a big cheers to the admins who make this place so great - fantastic job guys!
    Cheers.
    Cheers - Phil Taylor

Well done, Singapore is a great place. You get used to not owning a car and not cooking. I know quite a few people who have moved there and they eat at the hawker markets at night as it's cheaper and easier than cooking themselves.

Congrats Phil, you're absolutely gonna love it there. If this is your first time there.... the first thing you'll notice once the aeroplane doors open is the sudden rush of hot and humid air unlike anything you've seen in Victoria. I tend to hang out indoors such as shopping centres where the aircons are. The people are great and the food is even better! I'll be there next month and I can't wait for the chicken rice, curry laksa etc!

          Cheers

                    Re: How life changes...

Thanks guys! Yep, first time there so jumping in the deep end a bit but I've only heard good things.

Initially I have 2 weeks training in New York, then a few weeks shadowing another guy in Europe who does the job job there so I'll get to see more of the world in the first few months than I've seen in my life. Guess I'll have to learn how to pack lightly and deal with funny shaped power plugs

                      Re: How life changes...

                      sounds great !
From Melbourne- it'll take a couple of months to get used to the tropical climate - you'll think everyone moves slow at first
We lived in Singapore for two years in the late 90's. We loved it.
The car pricing hasn't change - not that you need one, the public transport system is superb, and cheap.
If you like a drink it can be expensive, but keep an eye out in the Cold Storage supermarket for specials.
Yeah, hawkers markets are great - we hardly ate at home - there's one in every neighbourhood.
The political system and their control over the media is well, lets say "interesting".
                      Cheers, Wayne

                        Re: How life changes...

Well done Phil. Sounds like a great job in a great country.

You can say goodbye to a car as you've found out, the cost of buying one is very high. Plus, you won't have a garage to keep it in unless your new job has such a high pay that you actually own a house. Where possible, go high in the condos. You'll get a much nicer/cooler breeze the higher you go. You'll have to get used to the traffic noise which goes on all through the night. At least Singapore don't allow loudspeakers from the mosques to broadcast their daily prayers.

You'll miss the cooler weather but the food is great and cheap. Being a white person, you will be treated like a king. Plenty of international schools there and your kids will have to get used to the extra workload.

You won't have trouble with the Singaporean drivers there as they do follow road rules unlike the drivers in Malaysia. You'll get cultural shock as soon as you cross the causeway into Malaysia. Don't really know much about 4WDriving in Malaysia. Don't see a lot of 4WDs around. Just lots of Protons everywhere.

Best of luck and I might bump into you late Feb when we go through Singapore.

Yep used to work up there a fair bit and as above never cooked a meal. Jumbo seafood is also a great place your beer tab is usually more than the seafood. I asked them how fresh the lobster was one time and she asked me what flight i was on, then went away and came back to inform me the pinchy i was eating was actually in the hold below me coming over.

                          You will love it

Not in my experience, Andrew. Tourists maybe, but living and working there, I had to earn every bit of respect with the locals.
Very important Phil to learn about "face" and not belittling or embarrassing people in public - very different to here.
There's a nickname in Cantonese for us whiteys. You might sometimes hear it whispered as you walk past - I never worked out if it was derogatory or just a bit of a joke
