Installing lights on awning

I installed some LED light strips to my awning and switches
These 2 are for the awning, 1 is the row along the car and the other is fo the other end
(got a bit carried away with the 5 minute epoxy, will clean it later)



This is where the power enters and the black switch if for the roof top tent lights

Got the led's from ebay and it came with a sticky backing, enjoy.

Can't take all the credit mate, monkey see-monkey do, it might inspire others but remember bugs love light as well, skeeter (mozzie) netting helps.

Yeah they do and you can get DIY kits. They use Ultrasound, typically, to key them mozzies at bay.

You can get the tennis racquet type that take the 2 D cells, keeps the kids amused.

is that from experience with the led strip lights? I had heard bugs were not as attracted to them as 'normal' lights not sure how true that is, we are still converting across to all led.

Yea mate, last camping trip in Darwin I had to break out the mozzie netting for the awning, those little buggers were all over us :evil:

Here's my attempt at lighting up my Supa-Peg Awning. As I have yet to install a Dual Batt system (it's on the list of mods to do with all the others) I dont have power down the back other than the standard accessory plug which is on the opposite side of the awning so I needed an extn lead. The 5m LED strip light that I bought from Ebay is supplied on a roll, already comes with a male plug similar to an RCA plug or what you see on the end of the xmas lights that plug into the 12v power packs. Off to Jcar to buy some male & female plugs, along with some speaker wire (fig8 flex)and a cig plug. I wanted a 2m length under the awning to light it up nicely but was concerned about it being too bright so I bought a couple of these wireless remotes on Ebay for $7 ea !!!


This provides an on/off feature and the ability to dim the LED strip right down when needed (perfect for inside a tent/camper).

This unit presently sits inside the box in the rear of the Prado out of the way.

I then soldered the other the connector on the end of my led strip and tidied it all up with a bit of heat shrink

Following this I found this handy cig plug with an on/off switch and a 3m curly cord which is made by Narva ($26 from Repco). Now although it's not needed at the moment, it may replace my ext lead when I mount my power on the other side of the car and I can then just poke the cable though the side window and plug in and switch on/of when I need to

The LED strip comes with 3M double sided tape already installed so its then just a matter of picking a spot and sticking it down.

The only issue at present of course is that to run them I have to have the ACC on until I install the dual batt and perm power in the rear. This will now expedite said project as SWMBO will not want the keys left in the ignition all the time (nor I but it gets me an authority to proceed from the finance minister...hehe)

I have also made up a couple of short pieces, one of which I have installed under my young fellas bunk bed for a night light. I had a couple of 12v DC power packs laying around so I made up a lead for that and he loves the remote...

LED's

I bought myself one of those LED kits from KORR Lighting

It had one of those remotes and dimmer in it they are great you can be coming back from the camp fire and press the remote and your site is illuminated they work up to 30 meters away. You can also go to bed and one press then darkness without having to worry about torches to find your way back to the bed after you turned the lights out. They also have splitters to go 2 or 3 different directions and individual dimmers you can insert before each light if needed. Very impressed with the amount of light they give out and how little power they use. I used 1 of those little rectangular 9v batteries to light up a 50cm flexible strip I carried upon my hat and put the battery in my pocket and it was still giving out light after 10 hours but starting to fade by then. I have used the led's on the roof rack while fishing at night at Fraser Island and the light actually lit up the waves as well as being able to see where those hooks were dangling.
Very impressed with them.
