  • Fraser or Moreton Island?

    Hi all,
I'm thinking about heading back to either Fraser or Moreton Island in mid Jan. I've never been to either during school holidays and checking the camp site online booking availability, they both have lots of sites available. Can anyone comment on the crowds I should expect on either island... my preference is Fraser but I've heard horror stories of long queues for the barge from Inskip Point.
    Sean.

Inskip point is no issues as they run multiple barges when busy, if you are going for more than 3 days go to fraser, abviously a lot bigger and more to do and see, if it is a quick trip then Moreton is good as you can basically do the place over in a couple of days.
You could actually spend weeks on fraser and still not see everything. Fraser is my favourite.

We were on Fraser a couple of weeks back. 4 barges going, We were one of two cars going home. It wasn't that busy on the island compared with what I have heard during school holidays. The rain was probably keeping people away.

The barge to Fraser is the least of your problems. There are at least 2 barges running constantly and the trip is only 15 minutes tops. Barge to Moreton needs to be booked well beforehand. If you're going to either in January, take plenty of Bushman's or Rid. The flies can be pretty full on.

Easy decision: go to Fraser. In my opinion Moreton simply does not compare. If you can spend a minimum of a week at Fraser due to the amount of things to see and do on the island and soak up the environment.

there both awesome! i prefer to fish Moreton, and tour fraser.
both cost around the same by the time you add everything up.
No fuel on Moreton now. 180lts should see you do a few laps anyway!!!!!!!

Thanks everyone. The decision is made. Doing Fraser... hoping to stay at Waddy Point. The QLD DERM advises crowds should be ok.... shouldn't be booked out but the track off the beach to Waddy Point has bonnet deep holes in the track and some people have been having issues getting back. Can't wait to see that!
