  • 2nd start jammed on?

    Hi all you gurus,
New to this group, so I appreciate your help.
    I got myself a 2nd. hand 1999 model Prado, 3400 V6, Quad Cam.
It's got a couple of buttons on the centre console, next to the gear shift.
    1. 2nd STRT (starts in 2nd. gear)
    2. ECT PWR (Extra accelleration)
    that bit is OK.
I pushed the button "2nd STRT" just to see what will happen and so far, I have not found a way to get the Prado out of 2ns strt mode.

I would appreciate it if someone could explain to me how to get MY Prado out of 2nd. strt, as I have found nothing in the owners manual at all.

    Best regards to all.
    Frank

Just push the button again... down is active and up is not. ECT Power is the same. There will also be a light that illuminates on the bottom of the dash when the features are active.

... otherwise, unless it's changed from my '98 model it might be stuck :?
    Cheers, Leon

hmmm mine is different to yours Leon, the 2nd start button does not lock in the up or down position, I just press it to engage 2nd start & then press it again to disengage. If 2nd start is engaged, when I turn the engine off then restart it, the 2nd start is disengaged automatically

Hmmm... yours is a 2002 isn't it? When did the 90 get a makeover... 2000??

From memory (which isn't that great these days ops: ) I need to manually disengage it even after turning the car off/on.

          Re: 2nd start

Can't comment on pre 2000 models but in my 2002 (TD, not petrol) if you press the ECT button it also turns off the 2nd start function.
          Perhaps try that

            Re: 2nd start

My 2nd start doesn't lock down either. And it is reset when I stop the engine. I tried my 2nd Start on the road once.... it just makes for a sluggish takeoff.... I don't imagine it could be good for the transmission to use it in high range...

One way to test it is to crawl along at a speed that you know would keep you in 1st (<10Km/h) and hit the button, you should feel it jump up to second.

              Re: 2nd start

Here I thought 2nd start was 2nd start. It appears that it is different from vehicle to vehicle...

Mine 2001 GXL TD Auto - push 2nd start down to engage & push again (up) to disengage.

Re ECT, I don't use it on the Diesel, it pulls better from lower revs than higher

              Cheers

                Re: 2nd start

Myn is 01 turbo diesel grande auto, just tryed the second gear start button, when I push it, it shows 2nd gear start on the top left of the dashboard in orange and if I try and take off its takes off in second, when I turn the ignition off and then back on again the light has gone out. If I have it on and take off it will try and pull away in second gear, if I stop then push botton again the light goes out and its starts off in first. There is no height difference with the button when its activated or not it stays the same height as the power button hence why it turns itself off when the key is turned off and back on again. Dont use it, never have, supposidly only use is for snow to stop wheel spin when taking off. Regards Steve M

                  Re: 2nd start jammed on?

Yep that sounds about right Steve....got to say though I never had it on & turned the car off & back on...

I use the 2nd start in really hilly variable offroad conditions.

With the 2nd start on, you can then "manually" select 1st & second (& kinda 3rd) with the T-Bar.....

                  Cheers

                    2nd start not engaging.

My 2nd Start button on the Prado KZJ95W was working but now, when depressed, does not show if its engaged or otherwise.

Is there a fuse I can check for its failure to register its position on the dash board indicator panel? I am not sure if the 2nd Strt is engaged or not

My 97 Petrol is the same as what some others have said on here but theirs are post 2001 models, You press the 2nd start button to engage, and press again to disengage, the button does not stay down, if you press the PWR button the 2nd start disengages.
And just for reference, the A/C buttons (front and rear), and rear demist buttons do the same, press to engage, press again to disengage, the buttons do not stay down.

That's interesting, my A/C and demister buttons stay down, like the PWR button.

It may all come down to the equipment level and age of your Prado, mine is a VX Grande, and as the usual, the later GXL models will inherit the VX's gear, just like GX will inherit GXL gear.
