Support question: Cannot upload new avatar

Hi folks - sorry if this is OT, but I can't figure out why my new avatar is not uploading.

I go into the control panel, into my profile and to the change avatar page, select my JPEG file (that meets all the requirements) and click submit and get the following error: "Temporary folder could not be found. Please check your PHP installation."

I have tried with a GIF file and a JPEG, but always get the same error.

Anyone know what's causing this? Or more importantly, how to fix it?
