    Re: 4x4 rage?

You didn't just drive past 20 or 30 cars that were all banked up and then expect to be let in just because you were in front at the last moment I hope.
This can upset some drivers who have been patiently waiting in a queue.
I know you are in the right when merging if you are in front, but queue jumping can upset some people.
Otherwise it is probably like the others have said they just don't want a big slow 4WD in front of them.

I understand your comment, Ron, but this wasn't the case at all. Once was coming off a round-about where the two exit lanes merged into one. The other was just a standard 3-lane-into-2 merge in moving traffic. In both cases, I was clearly ahead of the other vehicles, had given reasonable indication, and commenced the merge.

I'm just going to practice my "breathe-in-breathe-out" and "slow-count-to-10" skills.

At the end of the day, I'm more concerned about the safety of my family and myself than point scoring against some twit.

I am glad I don't live in Perth anymore.... very agro drivers there.
The tourists that come here are idiot drivers , they have no idea.
But... try driving in Thailand....that will open your eyes.

Same in Korea - if they don't see you, you don't exist! If you don't see them they don't exist... Madness, and a lot of fun at the same time - keeps you on your toes. Can park your car in the middle of the street, its ok as long as you have your hazard lights on - every one just goes around you... Without the hazard lights? Everyone goes nuts and onto the horns!

Similar for Brasil (Rio) - changing lanes 5 times on a 4 lane highway to try and gain a 1 or 2 car advantage at the next set of lights, with complete disregard to what and who they cut off in the process! Scary stuff... Taking on the big trucks, flashing highbeams and general disregard when it comes to passing a truck thats changing lanes and the inherent risk of being crushed between it and the concrete barrier at over 110km/h...

Just a few of many examples, makes adelaide drivers look like well behaved angels!!!

Welcome to the world of 4wds, you will get use to this.
And then these are the same people that claim 4wders are the bad ones.

                Re: 4x4 rage?

Having recently come from a sedan, honestly cannot see a difference in peoples driving styles when I am in the Prado. I do recognise with the visability issues behind it though but if you keep up with the traffic and don't do the "auto crawl" but stopping early and drifting up to the next car it's a non issue.

What I don't get is the thought that a set of high power airhorns/steel bull bar is going to win friends and influence people. No matter what car I am in, nor the reasons if you hit others from the rear or try and intimade them that goes way beyond normal behaviour and will only lead to esculation from the other party. Please consider others rights to use the road and show some patience out there.

Really how much difference is a car getting in front of you going to make ?

There is no difference if a car gets infront of you, it is the attitude from the car drivers as they will not let a 4wd merge.
Had the same thing happen to me this morning at the merge of Logan MWY & Gateway MWY, as the Mt Lindsey HWY is on the same merge, a BMW sped up to block me from merging onto the Logan MWY, which was fine eventhough no other vehicle was behind me to merge aswell, but he tried to merge onto the Gateway MWY at the last second, but was blocked by a truck and other traffic, so he had to brake hard to get behind the truck but made me brake hard as I was accelerating to get onto the Logan MWY, all of this could have been avoided if he merged behind me.

Perth would have to be the worst place for for merging, drivers there seem to have no idea how to merge at the same speed as the other traffic.
Also enforcement is very casual have seen police cars cut off but nothing done. So if the police won't enforce the law it is little wonder it is becoming more prevalent.

Also 930pm there is a program on ABC TV called Drive which looks quite interesting. More info here

Putting my truck drivers hat on again, but it still applies to 4wdrives. This happens a lot when slowing down, someone takes the opportunity to wizz round in front of you into the safe gap you have left between yourself and the vehicle in front, then they realize why you were slowing down and stand on the brakes. You no longer have the safe braking distance that you left and are forced to stand on the brakes. Now if you are unable to stop, and rear end the vehicle in front who is at fault? you are.

So sometimes another car getting in front of you could literaly be a matter of life or death. If I am in a 68 tonne truck and they are in a Hyundai i know whos death it would be.

                        Cheers Andrew

I could guess what would have happened should you use the warning device (aka horn)? The driver of said Hyundai would start shouting obsenities and waving the birdie around...

Cos of course, that would be your fault not theirs...

It is even worst towing a camper trailer , I had a doodle head in a convertable Saab that sqeezed in front of me on a merge whilst i was towing and I think he realised he was in the wrong by not reacting as I was sitting next to him at the next set of lights I decided I no longer want to eat the pie I just purchaced as it was to hot , so were must I dispose of it . :P :P
not so long ago I also noticed an amusing sticker on a back of a truck which read " I may not be fast but I always win in merging "

Sadly all the posts (mostly) have it nailed. My wife calls it "4wd envy". It gets worse when you tow a trailer. Even if the trailer is empty. Weird. Soft roader drivers get it a lot too. The ENVY that is  .
