  • latest 4wd Action magazine

Just got the latest issue of 4wd Action mag. It has a write up about what they consider the best 10 tourers between $5K and $40K. There are several catagories listed by price eg under $5K, $5k to $10K etc. etc. Prado 90 series gets a badge in the $15K to $20K and the 120series gets one in the $20K to $30K. Then they list their top 10 used buys. In this listing the 90 series gets a gurnsey which is good to see, but I notice they give the NP Mitsubishi Pajero a jumper also. Now I know a lot of people have no time for 4wd action and I am starting to have serious doubts about the magazine myself, but having read the magazine over a number of years I have seen numerous articles where the 120 series Prado TD it put up against the NP pajero in the midclass shootout or what ever they call it. There is the usual jabber about the Pajero 3.2 DID having a much more punchier motor but the end result is that overall the Prado comes up trumps off road and is the overall best package. Yet in this issue they seem to rate the Pajero higher. The reason I bring this topic up, is how often do we see magazines give their write ups about vehicles only to contradict themselves further down the track in later issues. I guess we're a bit biased towards the Prado otherwise we wouldn't be here, I guess actions speak louder than words.

I imagine they would have just given it to whichever vehicle had the most slabs of beer in it per category.

I notice the Pajero was one of the top 10 USED buys.
That doesn't make it a better vehicle than a 120 series, just a better used buy and being honest, looking at the price of a Pajero against a Prado its hard to argue with that.
Afterall there are posts in this forum where some are getting better value buying a new 150 as the 120 prices are very close to a new 150.

The high price of the Prado is good for those with one but doesn't necessarily make it a good used buy.

walks slowly away looking for cover

for this mag unless you in a Patrol or Cruiser you don't really count. In the ten 4WD's that changed the entire marketplace it listed the Pajero as the one car that built a new section now known as the mid sized market that enabled a Prado to exist as competition. You really don't ever see either in the magazine and considering the footprint by sales and longevity of both variants they really get no airplay at all by comparison to the rigs shown each issue

          Re: latest 4wd Action magazine

There was an issue put out a few months back that did the same comparison, best 2nd hand offroaders. The 90 series topped that too. I haven't got the latest issue yet but I am wondering if they have just re-printed that article?

I have bought a few issues of 4WDA over the past couple of months but have decided not to waste another cent on it (unless they release a Prado special  ).

They boast on the cover about having 292 pages! Yeah, 200 pages of solid advertisements for snake racing and HZ turbo kits that lower your fuel bill  , and 92 pages of actual reading material

And the content is totally irrelevant unless you're into solid axle swaps on hiluxs or putting those stupid bull bars on GQs that allow you to climb obstacles that exceed your approach angle.

Okay I'm done now. Carry on.

I tend to agree with the comments so far but IMO, bios opinions on products and services are common everywhere, dependant on what you read and who you listen to, including this site. You need to take it all in and then form you own opinion on the subject. Magazines & TV shows need to keep their major advertisers happy to survive. Remember, "opinions are like ar@#*holes, everyones got one", so form you own.

                Re: latest 4wd Action magazine

without reading the articles here is something to consider. The resale price of a Prado is high. Resale of a Pajero is much lower and given that they offer similar performance maybe as a used vehicle the Pajero is more appealing since you may be able to pick one up, change over to a long range fuel tank, if not already done, to give similar travel distance to the Prado and possibly still be in front dollarwise. You still have that crap chassis in the Pajero but the driveline is supposed to be more superior with better diffs (and possibly factory rear locker) and better gear ratios.

                  Re: latest 4wd Action magazine

One thing that hasn't been mentioned is the writers/testers from years ago are not the same writers/testers now. That needs to be taken into considerstion, as well as peoples tastes are different, what one person likes does not mean everybody will like it.
Also the more people that want a particular model of vehicle, will inflate the price of that vehicle, this is why you still see 90 series Prados still in the $20000 + bracket.

                    Re: latest 4wd Action magazine

Two issues are at play here - "Prado V Pajero" and "Is 4WD Action full of it?".

Being a Prado website, its fair to assume most people will pick the Prado over the Pajero, and defend their choice for doing so (although I do think Leethal raises some great points).

As for 4WD Action, the actually writing doesn't bother me so much, its more the repetitivity in articles... Anyway, I still have 10 months to go on my subscription, and it passes my time sitting on the train!

                      Re: latest 4wd Action magazine

I think they purely rated the Pajero over the Prado because of price.
Similar argument between a GQ and an 80 Series.

As for Prados not being in there much, that's simply because in the whole scheme of things, Prados aren't modded much. You've gotta admit the most you'll see is a 2" lift, some barwork and a couple of lights. Doesn't really write itself an article. Much easier to write up on something that has a mods list a page long.

And regarding 4WD Action, they're biased just like every other publication out there! They write what sells. I'll keep renewing my subscription because of the "giveaways" with it. For $260 I got myself a hi-lift jack (claimed to be $150), Narva handheld light (claimed to be $99) and 14 issues of the mag. Can't really complain considering I wanted both a hi lift and light!

Prado outsells Pajero 4 to 1. That's a lot of opinions.

Just remember guys, the magazine got 26000 people to email Canberra to stop the banning of bullbars. Not a bad effort.

                            off topic,

                            but may help some,

I get all my good mags delivered by the web to my computer now, and it libraries them all, and notifies me when each new addition arrives.

At $10-$15 a yr subscription for a year, monthly editions, it beats reading the Aus mags hands down......
