  • Geoscience mosaic vs zone maps

I've managed to come by two sets of the Geoscience Australia 250k maps, one is the mosaic that you get on the Hema CD and the other is in zones (49-56).

I'm wondering if anyone else has both sets and what their opinions are about comparisons.

The zone set would seem to be more user friendly as there are only eight maps for the whole of Australia so presumably Oziexplorer will only get to the "edge" of the map eight times while crossing Australia, unlike the mosaic set that crosses into a new map all the time.

Its quite obvious that they are not the same set of maps as the quality varies considerably. I'm still undecided if one set offers a better "view" than the other.

Does anyone know the background behind these two sets, is one more recent than the other and why the two different formats?

Re: Geoscience mosaic vs zone maps

I actually have 3 versions of the same mapping- whole of Australia map as well.

I run the zone maps in a CE device (AVNC) like you mention there are only 8 of them so its easier.

the mosaics were popular in the past due to limited memory and ram making the zone maps too big for many of the original CE devices.

There are 2 sets (at least) of the nat map series, I again have both, from memory 2005 and updated in 2008. The 2008 version is nicer to view- looks like some time was spent choosing the colours the best match intended use, and the cities (well Brisbane) has some updated road networks the the 2005 version was missing.
